“Love Will Save the Day” was the fifth single by American singer-songwriter Whitney Houston from her second multi-platinum studio album Whitney. The single was released in July 1988 by Arista Records.
“Love Will Save the Day was produced by John “Jellybean” Benitez and features Roy Ayers on Vibraphone (Vibes).
At this time, Whitney Houston had achieved a record-breaking string of seven number-one hits, with four of those #1’s from her current album “Whitney”. “Love Will Save the Day” did not become Houston’s eighth consecutive number one, but continued her trend of hit singles by peaking in the US Top 10. The #9 peak on the Hot 100 was Houston’s lowest solo peak up to this time. The song also made the Top 10 without an accompanying music video.
Houston had stronger performances on the charts prior to this song but it did remain in the top 40 for 11 weeks, and reached #5 on the R&B Chart, and #1 on the Hot Club/Dance Play Tracks.
Internationally, the song mostly saw less success except in the United Kingdom, where it went Top 10 and Switzerland, where it went Top 20. It was a moderate hit in Germany, making 37; and was a minor hit in Australia, peaking at 77.

Whitney had a banner period from 1987 to 1988!
This could’ve been her eighth consecutive Hot 100 chart-topper, but I recall when she scored her seventh, she made a comment during one of her concerts that she’s is bigger than The Beatles. That didn’t go down well with many, both critics and public. I don’t know how much this affected the performance of Love Will Save The Day, but it surely won’t help.
I am sure that the Beatle’s comment affected the single’s chart performance greatly. There are a lot of Die-hard Beatles fans out there 🙂
I can’t imagine it was down to this. The comment was made at a concert in London if I recall and wasn’t very widely reported at the time. It seems very unlikely that this would have had such an impact in America. Far more likely is the combination of it being the fifth single from an album that had been out for a year and had sold well, no video and just one of those things – the Supremes had 5 consecutive number 1s in the 1960s followed by a single that stopped at number 11. I’m one of the few people likely happiest to have a good, clean copy of the 7″ of “Love Will Save The Day;” this one is replacing my current, tattered copy, immediately! Thank you SO MUCH, Paul!! …Oh, and Fred: the hum was something that caught my attention when Paul first upgraded to his tube amp. I’ve learned that the hum is the “price” for the lack of distortion on these vinyl rips. The manufacturer actually warns in their paperwork that some hum will be audible! Amazing. Thanks Gene you are absolutely correct about the tube amp it is just one of the trade off’s. I talked to a rep today on the phone about it and he told me that it is because tube amps are more sensitive to the noise floor.

Thanks! However, from 4:25 till the end of the song of How Will I Know, there is a very apparent hum on the right channel…as if the turntable wasn’t grounded. Any chance this might be re-done? Regardless, a great treat!
Fred my turntable is grounded properly. I do detect some hum during the fade out this hum is normal when using a tube amp. I am not really sure why it is a tad more noticeable on this track. I don’t hear it unless I am listening at a really loud volume. Unfortunately there is not much I can do about it. Sorry.
Hi again. First, I mean no disrespect and this is not a complaint. Second (to Gene and all) this is noticeable far before the fade out…in fact, there is no fade out as this mix ends in a “cold” manner…yes, there is a 1.5 second starting at 4:42 but the original recording just ends with the acappella phrase, “how will I know?”.
