Wham! – Everything She Wants (Japan 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

A. Front

“Everything She Wants” is a song by British pop duo Wham!, released in 1984 on Epic Records. In the UK and Europe the song was released on a double A-side with “Last Christmas”. It was written and produced by George Michael, one half of the duo.

Upon release, “Last Christmas” took the majority of the attention and airplay as it was appropriate in early December as Christmas approached. However, the presence of an equally-billed flip side meant that radio stations had something else to play once “Last Christmas” had lost its topicality.

The presence of the Band Aid project meant that the double A-side peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart, although in the process it became the biggest selling record not to get to number one. However, in the USA, the song did reach the summit of the Billboard Hot 100, and became the third number-one song in a row from 1984’s Make It Big album.

Wham! would go on to have two more number-one hits in the UK before splitting at their height in 1986.

This Japanese 7″ pressing contains a special message from Wham! thanking their Japanese fans for their support. In Japan Wham! were wildly popular. This track is exlusive to this release.

As a long time Wham!/GM follower, your material is like discovering a hidden level, thanks so much. Unfortunately a lot of the older links are no longer available, is there an option to re-enable these? Thanks.

Thanks for having this rare 7″ single. I do notice that despite the cover being in near mint condition, the scan of the single cover does not have the price and some details from other scans are not here.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this, Paul! I’ve always preferred the 7″ version of Everything She Wants as opposed to the album version. Too bad classic hit radio stations play the album version nowadays, if at all. Happy New Year!

Hi Paul,

Interesting that the Japanese title of this single is “Strategy of Love” — I haven’t seen the Japanese translation of the lyrics, but it seems to be taken from the overall feel of the song.

And “Last Christmas” is the mandatory karaoke song for an old friend of mine in Japan — thanks for the fond memories I get every time that song comes up!

Wham! is my favourite pop group of the first half of the 80s! So this post is most welcome! Thanks Paul! Everything She Wants is GM’s favourite single from his Wham! era, and I think it’s the Wham! song he re-vists most. The best double A-sided single IMHO. As you’ve mentioned, a #2 (5 weeks) and it was the 6th best seller of 1984, and ending the 80s decade as the 6th best-seller too! Goes to show its consistent sales post-1984. Speaking of the Wham! you have. Can I ask if there is a 12″ version for Club Tropicana? I… Read more »

Wow.. what a special treat. That little message is so funny, it was so obviously written by their Japanese record company for them to just read out. 😀

BTW Paul – do you know about Wham’s little prank they played for a Japanese TV commercial?

Check out the re-sung lyrics for Freedom.
ISTR them laughing in Smash Hits at the time about what they’d done, though I may have dreamt that.

Hmm, this remix edit is exclusive to this release to my knowledge.
Great remix by the way, if you compare it to the original album version.
Thanks for this new post, Paul.

I don’t think I have this remix edit yet. Thanks, Paul! Too bad your magic doesn’t extend to resurrect the shop that sells those Special Goods.
