Burning The Ground Exclusive 1981
“Mind of a Toy” is the third single by the British pop group Visage, released on Polydor Records in March 1981. It was taken from the band’s eponymous debut album, following up their international hit “Fade to Grey”. The song reached #13 on the UK singles chart.
The music video for the single was directed by former 10cc members Godley & Creme, who had branched out into video production by that time. The theme of the video was Steve Strange’s idea, who decided on a Little Lord Fauntleroy look. In his autobiography, Blitzed!, Strange claimed that the video was banned by the BBC’s Top of the Pops as it was considered to be “frightening for children”, however it was actually screened on the show on 19 March 1981.

he still tours even now, and has played a few visage
songs during his show. just this morning i was listening
to his concert cd from the vienna tour, and it had some
from visage on it.

Hey -1
I attended Midge´s Duesseldorf concert two or three years ago and it was just awesome. I must admit quite a large part of the people present did not seem to be too familiar with the Visage catalogue but when “Fade To Grey” was played the roof flew off 😉
By the way, 1981 was a great year for Visage. The album and singles were good and successful here in Europe. 1981 was also the year that saw the marriage of Prince Charles and “Lady Di”, and Diana invited Visage to that invent, as seemingly her personal favorites of what was called “New Romantics” in the music scene of Britain. It was all a bit of a romantic joke. Today, more than 40 years later, Diana is long dead, her sons don’t like each other, seemingly torpedoing the monarchy, where Charles now is king and newly married, we have become… Read more »
Thank you, HoTo for the history lesson boy times have changed and somewhat stayed the same. 🙂
Very much appreciated, thank you!
I wish you could bring yourself to restore and post the other Visage singles again, that aren’t available now for so long.
Great job, thank you!
I might do that HoTo 🙂
“We Move” is such a great b-side.
I agree with you, Will 🙂
A Big Thank You Paul, for posting Visage’s “Mind Of A Toy” 12″. The first two Visage albums VISAGE (1980) & The Anvil (1982) were very popular. Midge Ure & Billy Currie being involved created great tracks and Steve Strange was a excellent frontman. I actually liked Visage’s third album Beat Boy (1984) and the 12″ single of Beat Boy, it didn’t do well chart wise. Many people hated the roaring guitar and sax, maybe it would’ve done better in 1985, the year of The Power Station. Beat Boy had many great tracks including my favourite “Can You Hear Me”.… Read more »
You’re very welcome, John. Also thank you for teaching me a few things I was not aware of 🙂
Awesome! And I see Midge Ure is involved?! How awesome as I’ve been diving into Ultravox lately! I know Fade To Grey but never have dove into Visage so this will be fun! Thanks!
You’re welcome, ING 🙂
This was actually the first ever 12″ single I ever bought, and it was a good one to start with as it has three extended ‘Dance’ mixes. It was seeing the Godley and Creme video on Top of the Pops that made me go out and buy it, as the video is amazing. The B side includes ‘We Move’ Dance Mix, which was of the best songs they recorded which wasn’t included on an album, it was also the lead track on the US/Canada only EP and was going to be released as a US only single, but was shelved.… Read more »
You’re welcome, Richard 🙂
You are freaking fantastic, Paul!! I love Visage, their sound, image and look!! They had great people/musicians behind them and terrific videos!! This 12-inch is packed with phenomenal mixes!! Wish I was back there to live in the club land where the New Romantic movement ruled!!!
Thank you Paul for EVERYTHING!!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff 🙂
