Viola Wills – Stormy Weather (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND DISCO EXCLUSIVE 1982

Front Cover

“Stormy Weather” is a 1933 song written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem. Viola Wills covered the song in 1982, it peaked at number four on the dance charts.

The song tells of disappointment, as the lyrics, “Don’t know why there’s no sun up in the sky” show someone pining for her man to return. The weather is a metaphor for the feelings of the singer; “stormy weather since my man and I ain’t together, keeps raining all the time.”

Viola Wills died of cancer on May 6, 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona at 8:27am Pacific Time. Her funeral was held at the Macedonia Abbey Baptist Church in Los Angeles on May 15, 2009.

DJ Paul T, I am just so SAD to receive your news this evening (September 30). This above post from “Born in Motown [in THE DAY]” is from ME before I knew how to sign in and leave a comment without revealing my email. I remember having to email you again, and ask that you make sure, and take off my email. I hope that you weren’t offended by the “Queenie”-sound of my message. Viola has this knack of turning standard classics into groovy dancfloor gems. Thank you for this and if you have her version of Both Sides Now and Gonna Get Along Without You Now (Les Adams Remix)(http://www.discogs.com/Viola-Wills-Gonna-Get-Along-Without-You-Now/release/746429), it’d be great!

Hope your recovery is going on smooth and have a nice Sunday, Paul!
