BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
REQUEST
“You Take Me Up” is a song by the British pop group Thompson Twins. It was the third single to be taken from their 1984 album Into the Gap and was released in the UK on 23 March 1984. It was written by Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway, and prominently features harmonica and a melodica solo. The single peaked at #2 in the UK, making it their highest chart position for a song, and spent eleven weeks on the chart. In addition to the regular 7″ and multiple 12″ releases, Arista Records also released four different shaped picture discs for the single, three of which were part of a jigsaw.
In the US the single spent nine weeks on the Billboard 100, peaking at #44. The promotional music video for this single was directed by Dieter Trattmann.
The B-side of the single was a non-album track entitled “Passion Planet”.
The 12″ mixes together “You Take Me Up / Machines Take Me Over” and “Down Tools” making it one eleven minute track. I have left it this way to preserve the original continuity of the single. The remasterd CD release seperates the tracks.

In typical fashion Edsel botched up their 2 cd reissue from a few years back. This track suffered in particular. Brilliant to have it in such wonderful quality. Probably in my top five TT tracks!
But they did at least issue a new CD2 which amended the mistake didn’t it? I got the replacement disc
Hmmm… did not know that. Probably too late for me, but I shall look into it. Thank you NKelly!
Yes i assumed from your words that you didn’t know. Never too late their mistake. Indeed seek out your replacement Mothloop!
Thanks! And, Tom Bailey has recorded new music, too!
Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey new material due out later in the year of course…
You’re welcome Mike C. 🙂
it’ll be interesting to see if the new music owes more to the original Thompson Twins sound or International Observer.
Either way works for me. I always imagine Tom singing over certain songs such as Lampedusa, Cellphone Dub and Flip-Flop Cemetery.
First Mel & Kim, then Bronski Beat and now the Thompson Twins! It’s as though your inside my brain picking out my all-time favourite Eighties music!
Hmmm… but can you possibly predict who’s next on the list???
Archiefax there really is now way of predicting what I will post next. I can give you a clue just Live It Up 🙂
I’d have to be mental as anything to be able to guess that!!! lol
Thanks Paul! I didn’t have this single. THANKS VERY MUCH! 🙂 🙂
Kent
You’re welcome Kent 🙂
Paul, what can I say… WOW!!! I requested this not so long ago and you have delivered the goods! An absolute massive thanks for this. I have tried so hard to get this particular mix and you have managed it. Brilliant and awesome.
You’re welcome Roy I had fun working on this one 🙂
Thanks Paul. Everything the TT did was awesome.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
I am all smiles over this posting Paul. I just love this song!! And this extended version is so awesome. It’s probably one of my top favorites TT have ever done.
And Paul, the music you post is so healing. So many times, if I’m blue, I can ALWAYS count on you and BTG to perk up my emotional, mental and spiritual states. Like Carly Simon once sang: “Nobody Does It Better!” DjPaulT, you’re the best!!!
Great big bear hug!!!
Jeff
That’s good to hear Jeff when the music makes you smile. Bear hug back to ya! 🙂
Thanks Paul!
This was one of my fave singles by TT 🙂
You’re welcome Junior 🙂
How about “Hold Me Now”, ” Doctor! Doctor!” and ” Lay Your Hands On Me”? I love those 7″ US edits plus other different mixes 🙂 Do you have some?? Keep doing what you do! And thanks.
I do indeed have more of the Thompson Twins Chris 🙂
Another great choice, thanks! Glad to see you posting more familiar artists, I like the obscure stuff, but I was afraid you were drifting further and further way from 80’s top 40.
David I do love to give the obscure stuff a second chance so much of it is very under rated. I am still very much into the more known artists too 🙂
A good song is a good song. This blog is the perfect for finding hard to find, rare or unheard musical gems. Please “hit us” with the popular synth-pop tunes as well because the quality is great and these days even songs like “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League is hardly broadcast these days.
Wow refreshed my page after 10 minutes to see this. Literally had to do a double take and was baffled for a few seconds as i’m not kidding i’ve just wrote something seconds before on a certain site containing the letters NWO about Thompson Twins. Plus i thought this had been posted in the past. No doubt something similar and i will check that now. Awesome. All i have to say is… More Thompson Twins please! And many thanks once again
Enjoy! Neil 🙂
Just checked and was amazed to spot not only that the 12″ isn’t on the site in any capacity but also not on my hard drive. Could’ve sworn i’d seen this here in the past! Do you have the Runaway 12″ by any chance? Wonderful song!
I will see if I can locate that one Neil.
Wow that would be truly awesome. It’s on the remaster (‘Set’ i recall) but some reports were bad quality. I have it of course but no idea it sounds OK to these ears…
