Thompson Twins – Lies (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

“Lies” is a 1983 song by the British New Wave/Synthpop band Thompson Twins. It was released as the first single from the album Quick Step and Side Kick (which was renamed Side Kick in the U.S.), and the song peaked at #67 on the UK singles chart. The single fared better in the United States, where it peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1983. Along with the B-side track “Beach Culture”, “Lies” also spent two weeks at #1 on the American dance chart in January 1983, becoming the band’s second #1 on this chart (“In The Name Of Love” had spent five weeks atop this chart in 1982).

The music video was played on MTV and other video programs and features a view of the band’s feet at the end of an oversized bed, bouncing back and forth to the rhythm of the song, as a variety of sights pass in a room similar to Bowman’s bedroom in 2001: A Space Odyssey or a Magritte painting. At the end, the bed is revealed to be a hospital bed.

This was one of the first 12″ singles I ever purchased. Still have it! Thank you for ripping it for us.

Hi Paul
Just wanted to say thanks for re-invigourating my love for Thompson Twins… First became a fan through “We are Detective” and bought quite a lot of 7″ singles of theirs in the 80’s before their luck seemed to run out. After checking out your posts I actually went off to Itunes UK and found “BoxSet” which I’d never seen before. Contained the remastered albums plus b-sides and masses of the original 12″ mixes. I’m in Thompson Twins heaven! 🙂

Do you have the 12″ of The Gap: http://www.discogs.com/Thompson-Twins-The-Gap-Extended-Version/release/1221526

I’ve never heart the extended version but it’s one of my favourite Thompson Twins songs. Would really appreciate hearing this. Thanks.

Hi Darren. The full extended version of The Gap was a CD bonus track on Greatest Mixes in 1988. (Although most of the remixes were edits, the two bonus tracks were not.) You might be able to find a cheap used copy of that CD.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Christian. I found “The Gap (Club Remix)” on Play.com’s MP3 download sections for 99p as one of the tracks on “The Best of Thompson Twins: Greatest Mixes” album as you said, so thanks for that. It’s 8 mins 34 and absolutely terrific, it’s going to be going on my MP3 Walkman tomorrow! It’s the first time I’ve heard it, I never even knew it existed, as back in the 80s the only source of (limited) info were magazines like Smash Hits and radio/TV. I’m surprised it wasn’t included as an extra track on… Read more »

I got into Thompson Twins when I heard Love On Your Side on the radio at school and never understood why Lies was never a big hit here in the UK. Great tune, thanks for sharing. 🙂

One of my favourite 80s acts as well, especially from 82-85.
They do what they do oh so well.
While In The Name Of Love is a cool New Wave single, Lies is the one that really gravitated me towards the trio.
Have the remastered CD as well, but thanks for your vinyl rip, Paul!

Awesome! Thanks very much and great work on the cover. Side Kicks very underrated and quite possibly just as good — or better — than Into the Gap!!

Thank you Paul! The Thompson Twins were one of my absolute Top Ten Artists of all Time. I had the chance to see them on their Quick Step Tour in 1983 – Brilliant.

Nice post. I won’t be downloading this as I already the UK re-release of the Quick Step and Side Kick double CD with these tracks on it.
One note that might be of interest to other readers is that this is the last release by TT without their ‘three heads’ logo, which was made up of their heads in the poses on the front of this release!!!

As do I, and it’s very well mastered. Nevertheless, as is typical, this original vinyl has slightly more dynamic range than the Loudness War-era CD remaster, especially on “(Bigger and Better) Lies”. However this rip has slight distortion of vocal sibilants, so it’s a trade-off. Those of you who can’t hear or don’t care about these things, thank your lucky stars…
