DISCO FRIDAY!

Re-Rip Remaster

Originally I posted this one on December 15, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“What a Fool Believes” is a song written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. The best known version was recorded by The Doobie Brothers for their 1978 album Minute by Minute (with McDonald singing lead vocals and Michael Jackson backing voice). The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 14, 1979, remaining in that position for one week. The song received Grammy Awards in 1980 for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

“What a Fool Believes” was one of the few non-disco No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 during 1979. The song lyrics tell a story of a man who is reunited with a former lover and attempts to rekindle the relationship with her, only to realize she never really loved him and shows no interest in continuing an affair with him.

Michael Jackson claimed to have contributed at least one backing track to the original Doobie Brothers recording, but was not credited for having done so.

Love that song.
Everytime I hear this mix I think the additional percussion is a bit out of synch. What do you think Paul?

In a way, you’re right. The wood block “clicks” are just slightly, but definitely, lagged just a hair or two behind the rest of the percussion. However, after giving it a couple of listen-throughs, I think it’s deliberate. It does give the impression of the percussion being slightly de-synced if you’re not paying attention to exactly which instrument is lagging behind, though.

I had no idea a “disco” version of this even existed. Where do you find these things, Paul? 🙂

Ha! That was a partly rhetorical question, to be sure. 🙂 I get similar reactions when I play a lot of things during my Second Life streams. A big part of the fun of it is getting that “OMG I haven’t heard this in years!” or “Wow, where did you find this?” reaction when I pull out some non-album “B”-side track, or an obscure one-hit wonder, or an alternate 12″ mix, instead of just streaming the same stuff everyone else plays. You have to admit, though, “The Doobie Brothers” is not exactly the first name that comes to mind when… Read more »

Paul, I guess I was under the impression that most of the stuff you post was from your vinyl collection back in the day. How much of it is from the 70s/80s versus stuff you’ve bought in the past few years? Just curious.

Hi Paul, Sorry for not having the time to reply the past week. But your week’s worth of posts are amazing!!! Love it when you do your re-rips, more so as this is one of my favourite singles of the 70s! Michael McDonald actually came up with the storyline for the song on board a flight to LA. When he got back home, he started working on the melody but got stuck at the bridge. He played the song to producer Ted Templeman who loved it, and told him to complete the song. But Michael simply couldn’t. He had no… Read more »
