BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1978
DISCO FRIDAY!
Re-Rip Remaster
Originally I posted this one on December 15, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!
“What a Fool Believes” is a song written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. The best known version was recorded by The Doobie Brothers for their 1978 album Minute by Minute (with McDonald singing lead vocals and Michael Jackson backing voice). The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 14, 1979, remaining in that position for one week. The song received Grammy Awards in 1980 for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
“What a Fool Believes” was one of the few non-disco No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 during 1979. The song lyrics tell a story of a man who is reunited with a former lover and attempts to rekindle the relationship with her, only to realize she never really loved him and shows no interest in continuing an affair with him.
Michael Jackson claimed to have contributed at least one backing track to the original Doobie Brothers recording, but was not credited for having done so.

Looking forward to this one. I LOVE this song!
Thank you for the post
I feel this is among the so much vital information for me. And i am glad studying your article. But wanna remark on few general issues, The site style is great, the articles is really nice : D. Just right process, cheers
thank you !
been waitin for this one! thanks
Gratitude and respect. Thank you for your hard work
Love that song.
Everytime I hear this mix I think the additional percussion is a bit out of synch. What do you think Paul?
In a way, you’re right. The wood block “clicks” are just slightly, but definitely, lagged just a hair or two behind the rest of the percussion. However, after giving it a couple of listen-throughs, I think it’s deliberate. It does give the impression of the percussion being slightly de-synced if you’re not paying attention to exactly which instrument is lagging behind, though.
I had no idea a “disco” version of this even existed. Where do you find these things, Paul? 🙂
I agree with you doctor it does lag a bit but as you said I think it was intentional. Where do I find this stuff? I am just constantly looking at music on Discogs etc. I also hear about things from my readers 🙂
Ha! That was a partly rhetorical question, to be sure. 🙂 I get similar reactions when I play a lot of things during my Second Life streams. A big part of the fun of it is getting that “OMG I haven’t heard this in years!” or “Wow, where did you find this?” reaction when I pull out some non-album “B”-side track, or an obscure one-hit wonder, or an alternate 12″ mix, instead of just streaming the same stuff everyone else plays. You have to admit, though, “The Doobie Brothers” is not exactly the first name that comes to mind when… Read more »
Paul, I guess I was under the impression that most of the stuff you post was from your vinyl collection back in the day. How much of it is from the 70s/80s versus stuff you’ve bought in the past few years? Just curious.
Hi Mike about 60 to 70 percent is originally from the 70’s and 80’s but I keep adding to it even now and I have had to replace some things that I have lost over the years 🙂
another great rip and track keep them coming hopefully someday you can re rip the older ones that dont work anymore
do you have malcom mclaren and waltz darling by any chance?
That will be a big project Dazz22.
Great tune. Like many of your disco friday posts, it makes me wish I’d been born about 2 decades earlier.
Enjoy Mike 🙂
THANK YOU!
I’ve been wanting this in 24/96 since I saw it on your list but only as 16/44.
WONDERFUL!
You’re very welcome Louie 🙂
A real jewel. Thank you
You’re welcome Carmatope 🙂
Hi Paul, Sorry for not having the time to reply the past week. But your week’s worth of posts are amazing!!! Love it when you do your re-rips, more so as this is one of my favourite singles of the 70s! Michael McDonald actually came up with the storyline for the song on board a flight to LA. When he got back home, he started working on the melody but got stuck at the bridge. He played the song to producer Ted Templeman who loved it, and told him to complete the song. But Michael simply couldn’t. He had no… Read more »
