BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“Loveland” and “Cake” are tracks recorded by American new wave band The B-52’s. Both tracks were produced by David Byrne of Talking Heads. Both songs were taken from the EP Mesopotamia. The original Island Records vinyl & cassette release in the UK contained the extended versions of “Loveland” and “Cake”. This was an error, and the discs were quickly recalled and reissued with the correct version of “Cake” however the extended Loveland remained. These versions never appeared on the American release.
In France both songs were issued as a special 12″ promo. As far as I know neither of these mixes have appeared on CD.

Great post! Thanks
I’m not a massive fan of B-52s or David Byrne, but he also produced one of my favourite and most perfect albums of the 80s (Waiting by Fun Boy Three). This B-52s track came out a year before the FB3 album so am keen to hear how he cut his teeth. 🙂
Hello again, hello
Just came to say hello
I know it has nothing to do
With the B-52’s,
And I know it’s late
But I couldn’t wait,
Hello
Thanx Paul for all the B-52’s posts! I’d heard of these tracks but never heard them before (these original versions, anyway)
Thanks Paul with your B-52s posts. Do u also have Channel Z?
I forgot about that one. What a great song. Altogether now – “gettin’ nothin’ but static” lol
“Channel Z” is available in the “Love Shack” maxi CD!
I believe you are correct that these versions have never been officially released on CD. Unfortunately Warner Bros. felt it necessary to include the Mesopotamia remixes on the Mesopotamia/Party Mix CD. As you and VanceMan stated, there were few places where Mr. Byrne’s intended versions of the tracks were distributed. From what I understand, Warners were underwhelmed with the more experimental sound Mr. Byrne crafted for the band. I spent a good deal of time tracking down a ”decent” FLAC copy of the unremixed 1982 MLP release, and it’s really, really terrific (not the quality of the rip, but the… Read more »
WOW Thank you Paul. Never knew these versions existed. Can’t wait to hear them.
Great post Paul. Knew this existed, but never could find it. Hung out backstage with the band years ago at the Mizner Center in Boca Raton, Florida. They are as funny backstage as they are on stage. Had the whole audience up on their feet & dancing in the aisles through the whole show. Once again, thank you,
You’re welcome Dj Biffy. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Sounds fun 🙂
Really enjoying the B-52s series Paul. Never heard this one – thanks for sharing such a rare find.
You’re welcome Todd 🙂
I’m really enjoying these B-52 posts
Thanks again Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Junior 🙂
Awesome my friend. Can’t thank you enough! It’s a real shame that this 12″ didn’t include the 1 other alternative version that being ‘Throw that beat in the garbage can’ at 5.48.
I was just coming to say that the UK version of Mesopotamiaalso contained an extended, remixed version of “Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can.” (I have the UK version and can verify it). I didn’t know any of the three alternate mixes were issued outside of the UK, so today’s post is a surprise for me.
Wow, another amazing find. Thank you for these!
You’re welcome Dean 🙂
Wow Paul! You really bowl me over! Now this is something quite surprising. I’m so excited to check these rarities out. Thanks for starting the week off right my friend!!
Jeff
Thank you Jeff 🙂
