Sister Sledge – We Are Family (1984 Remix) (Germany 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

R.I.P. Joni Sledge (September 13, 1956 – March 10, 2017)

“We Are Family” is a 1979 dance hit song by Sister Sledge, composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. Rodgers and Edwards offered the song to Atlantic Records; although the record label initially declined, the track was released as a single from the album of the same name and quickly began to gain club and radio play. It eventually went Gold, becoming the number one R&B and number two pop song on the US charts in 1979. Along with the tracks, “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and “Lost in Music”, “We Are Family” reached number one on the disco charts. It was also the theme song for the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.

In 1984 the song was remixed by Bernard Edwards and re-released where it chated again in the UK at #33.

I remember this! And the Pittsburgh Pirates winning 4-3 over the Baltimore Orioles in the 1979 World Series!! I don’t think I’ve heard this main track since it was a major hit.
Thanks for the music, Paul, and all the memories triggered by listening 🙂

Hi Dj PaulT, Hope you had a nice weekend. I don’t know but for some reason I have been on a Sister Sledge discography binge these last few days and I was wondering if you have either or both B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Baby) – Special Disco Mix / Long Version or Frankie (Club Mix) 12″ versions to share. 🙂

Rediscovering these singles sure brings back great memories of their influence in the 80s. Thanks! 🙂

Thanks for honoring Joni and thanks for this. I was certain I had all versions of this song, but I was wrong :). I am grateful that you keep introducing me to amazing things, year after year.

Ah , a great idea to re-rip this one Paul. This remix still isn’t available on CD, so your pristine rip is the one we have to cherish.
A big loss for the sisters (they still performed), and a great loss for their fans. She passed away far too young!

I think I read somewhere that Simon Le Bon did background vocals on this remix.

Simon Le Bon and Andy Taylor did the backing vocals for the 1984 remix of Lost In Music.
A 12″ was released featuring Lost In Music (Special 1984 Nile Rodgers Remix).

I will try to get a near-mint copy and send it to you (along with a donation). The ’85 remix of He’s The Greatest Dancer is absolutely essential (and only on that 12″!)

Oh! Sadness takes hold of my heart. I hadn´t heard.
Thank you for your tribute, Paul. Can we hope for “Lost” and “Dancer”? 🙂

My younger musical life would not have been such fun without these sisters.
Great music, great performers, those girls. Wonder where that familiar sound came from Wink-Wink-Nutch-Nutch.

Thanks for this tribute Paul. I had the feeling you would do something to honor Joni Sledge. This track takes me back. I don’t know this remix, however, I am excited to hear it very, very soon. Although I love my New Wave and alternative music, I still am a deep disco-head. You’ve got some serious classics here on your site. Thanks for giving us dance music from the 70’s sometime.

You’re the best!!

Thank you Paul for your well wishes. The storm hasn’t started yet, but we are safe at home and, hopefully, we don’t lose power.

Again, thanks for this remix. I like to think that this song is perfect for all of us here at Burning The Ground. You make us feel so much like family. Thanks for spoiling us so!

Thanks Paul for this nice tribute to Mrs. Joni Sledge. I always loved this song and the Edwards Remix is great.
