Go look on Discogs, Can’t Stop WAS on the BeverlyHills Cop Soundtrack so him n’ Eddie Murphy must’ve had some falling out to have that track removed-maybe it was the ‘Studio’s’ idea + Eddie never backed Rick- who knows. Hi Paul, May I just say how absolutely F**cking Wonderful this ‘post’ is. It’s One’s like this that make me love your blog ! A lot of rubbish has been said & written about Rick James, but they rarely mention what beautiful + FUNKy Songs he wrote. This is one of ’em, which was in 2 parts on the LP but is amazing in it’s 12″ ‘form’. Some of his early albums got the re-issue+bonus tracks treatment but the Later stuff has been ignored. Just read through the comments. Rick James was very bitter and jealous about the attention that was going to Prince instead of him. They both came upon the music scene at about the same time, it’s just that Prince’s music appealed to more people, especially during and after Purple Rain. See, a lot of people, and if I may clarify, a lot of White people, thought that Dirty Mind was Prince’s first album, they had not heard of nor seen For You or Prince. I agree Antbee I think a lot had to do with image as well. Don’t mean to sound shallow but Prince had it more on the looks and image side and we all know that it sells records. Too bad Rick couldn’t have put his bitterness a side he was a great musician.

A think Rick James appeared in the music scene at the wrong time. He was making all these great raunchy R&B singles pre-Thriller pre-MTV, and mainstream radio don’t support his songs as they should.
And by the time mainstream radio has opened up more, Prince came along and stole his thunder.
But I agree his did give us many classics, and he is definitely more than just Super Freak!
I so agree with you Ric. James was way ahead of his time. Maybe Prince and others learned from him and yes he is more than Super Freak!

The master tape seems to be lost or misplaced in the vaults, because Ben Liebrand did ask Universal a few times to clear this extended version for his ‘Grand 12 Inch’ series. ‘We cannot find the master tape’ was the answer.
In the meantime we’ll have to resort to Paul! So nice to have the awesome instrumental version as well, just terrrrrific! At least you made my day yesterday 🙂
That’s what happens on here Stefano when nobody is familiar with the single they just don’t comment but leech instead lol. I agree with you it’s a really great underated song.
Hmm, I don’t get it. It was a hit single in Europe in 1985. You just can’t keep calm and tied down to whatever chair you’re sitting in while playing this song!
Somewhat unbelievable it didn’t work out in the US, but in the meantime ‘In My House’ by the Mary Jane Girls did! And THAT is really funny, because I think that ‘In My House’ is more or less ‘Glow Part 2’: it has the same production by Rick James and the same vibe and sound.
