Hey, please is there any chance we can request Rick’s 12 inch of “Whenever you need somebody”? It is available on CD, on the deluxe edition of his first album, but it is dynamically bricked to hell. I would love to hear it as originally intended, without the incompetent remastering.

No no no no no – even the association with this track cringes my spine. Totally abused song like non other in history. All my memories for ever tainted with juvenile jokes by people i don’t call friends..
I don’t ever wanna see his video or hear one line again (well, maybe after therapy and a few years in a medical environment).

But, don’t let me discourage you knewbies to enjoy the wonders of “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley – maybe just do not google it.

Thanks for posting this, Paul! Rick Astley had/s a powerful, expressive voice. I have a soft spot for SAW – Astley, Bananarama, Dead Or Alive – a classic sound that reminds you that you’re alive. They did well by him. Just two days ago, I saw yet another dis of Astley on some webpage. ‘Cause y’know, this isn’t “serious” music, like, um, ELP or Led Zep. Tho I’m straight, I see a lot of homophobia in hatred of “dance music”; go back to late 70s disco, stir in some racism, and Voila!, you have the ‘Disco Sucks’ crowd. Fortunately, my… Read more »

“Rick Astley’s new album: ’50’ is a new entry at number one in this week’s UK top 40 album chart. His first number one album in 29 years!”

Updated:

31 years, I think! Whenever You Need Somebody – Release date: 16 November 1987

I agree with DJ Paul. Rick’s new album is good. “I Like The Sun” is sort of like Rick’s James Bond theme. 🙂 I think Rick would be the ideal singer for the next James Bond theme and with his new found success you never know… he might have a small chance.

First of all, Thank You for posting this! It’s a great one for sure. The issue with the 2CD remastered ones is simply that these idiots don’t know how to leave the dynamic range alone. They suffer from noticeable peak limiting/compression to make them louder & that doesn’t make them better except to untrained ears. They’re not horribly done like so many other remasters, but it is a noticeable difference that can be heard/seen/measured. Go ahead & play that first pressing vs. the RM & see which one makes those power meters on your amp swing a little more as… Read more »

Awesome. Another great 12″ gets the BTG treatment and it seems that all of the mixes are here together!

Great rip Paul! I know Paul’s quality is awesome but Rick’s Whenever You Need Somebody (Remastered) 2-cd set is loaded with tons and tons of mixes…including all from this 12″.

I will take a high resolution DjPaulT rip any day over a poorly mastered over processed CD.

I’m not sure where you were going with that comment. But here goes: Of course…who wants a POOR cd quality version of the exact same track that sounds FANTASTIC from a vinyl rip? Nobody. You’re stating the obvious. What you seem to be implying is that all remastered sets with bonus material are of poor quality (at least the bonus material). They aren’t. You have to weigh (and listen to) your options. Some are fantastic quality…some are very good…and some are meh. Some remastered/deluxe/expanded cd sets are using poor source materials to begin with…some sets have inferior humans at the… Read more »

Well, I have the 12″ the 2CD set and I still want to check this out because I’d like to hear the difference. Honestly, this is one of my favorite 12″ records of all time, but as with a lot of what is posted here I have the originals but thanks to the magic touch Paul the records have something extra. This site offers is a place to find out about a lot of great records from back in the day. Paul occupies that place as a DJ and one who informs as well as entertains. As with many club… Read more »

I disagree, all remasters sound like they were done by some tech school leaver, I’ve never heard a good remaster, and trying to advocate for such a practice is difficult to comprehend at the best of times. Everytime some record company dip stick has had a go at “it”, they have either turned the volume up so loud that it’s just ear-aching, they’ve gone mad on the noise reduction, done some weird EQing, or some other nut job thing, I didn’t think that just transferring the mastertape to CD would be such a hard thing to do. They have to… Read more »

This really freaked me out Paul, because I just found out earlier today that Rick has a new album and that got me to thinking about his back catalog. Wow, you’re quite amazing in the way you pick up on vibrations and things. Tremendous stuff, really. And, it’s so cool for me too in that, (big swallow coming on), I’ve never heard the full 12-inch. I know the Hot Tracks version, but this will be new for me. Thanks as always for this twelve Paul. I am really pumped right now.
