For today’s Spooky Season Spin, we’re diving into the dark, psychological world of Propaganda.
Released in early 1984, “The Nine Lives of Dr. Mabuse” was the stunning debut single by German synth-pop group Propaganda, produced by none other than Trevor Horn for ZTT Records. The track introduced the world to the band’s dark, cinematic style — a fusion of industrial synth textures, haunting vocals, and avant-garde production that set the tone for what was to come on their debut album A Secret Wish (1985).
The Concept
The title references Dr. Mabuse, a fictional criminal mastermind from German cinema, first appearing in Fritz Lang’s 1922 silent film Dr. Mabuse the Gambler. Like Lang’s character, the song’s subject embodies manipulation, deception, and psychological control. Propaganda turned these themes into a sonic thriller — icy, dramatic, and hypnotic — blending electronic beats with orchestral tension and whispered menace.
The Sound
Produced by Trevor Horn and engineered by Stephen Lipson, “The Nine Lives of Dr. Mabuse” is a masterclass in 1980s studio innovation.
B-Side Gems
On the flip side, the 12″ includes “Femme Fatale (The Woman With The Orchid)”, Propaganda’s reinterpretation of the Lou Reed classic originally recorded by The Velvet Underground & Nico. Claudia Brücken’s cool, detached delivery gives the song an icy allure perfectly suited to Propaganda’s style. Closing the record is “(The Ninth Life of…) Dr. Mabuse”, a more experimental, atmospheric reprise of the main track — part remix, part deconstruction.
Chart Performance
The single reached #27 on the UK Singles Chart and #14 in Germany, gaining significant attention across Europe for its striking sound and surreal promotional video directed by Anton Corbijn. It firmly positioned Propaganda as ZTT’s “dark alternative” to Frankie Goes to Hollywood — both bands sharing the same production team but occupying very different emotional terrain.
Legacy
Decades later, “The Nine Lives of Dr. Mabuse” still stands as one of the defining art-pop singles of the mid-’80s. It bridged the gap between new wave, industrial pop, and high-concept electronic art. The 12″ mix remains essential listening — not just for Propaganda fans, but for anyone interested in how Trevor Horn and ZTT reshaped the possibilities of pop music production in the 1980s.

Thank you, Paul!
Love this! Just made my Halloween a bit more awesome! Thank you Paul!
Paul thanks for the great rip! As Jon mentioned earlier, this was my loved track too from the John Hughe’s movie Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) reminding me my teenage years. What can I say is few for this shining electro star track! Such tracks are made are being made only once! The synths, the mastering the arpeggios, the effects, all perfect. 10 out of 10 for this track! Thank you so very much Paul!!
Love this! The first time I heard this song was the opening credits of John Hughes’ Some Kind of Wonderful and I never knew what it was. Thanks!
Thanks Paul. I don’t think I need to add anything further. Many people have already commented on exactly what I would have commented on…this is pure 80s. A Masterpiece by Trevor Horn. Fantastic Synths+Chord progression and Claudia Brückens voice.
Thanks Paul, I have always loved the music of Propaganda! Here in the Netherlands they were very popular !
You’re very welcome, Peter 🙂
Thank you Dj Paul, this is something else. I have to admit I like the 13th Life Mix even more than the original! The haunting vocals and sublime synth beats are perfectly interwoven to create a truly ethereal listening experience. Trevor Horn was masterful here – are we sure he didn’t make any supernatural deals during production? The B side is no slouch either – Femme Fatale curiously manages to be both downtempo and uptempo at the same time, creating a duality of sadness and hope. It even manages to produce the illusion of a slower BPM than it actually… Read more »
Thanks so much, JP! 🎃 I love how you described this — “ethereal” and “deconstruction” really do sum it up perfectly. I’m with you on the 13th Life Mix; there’s something otherworldly about the way it all comes together — maybe Trevor did make a supernatural deal or two in the studio! 😊
And yes, that B-side… “Femme Fatale” has such a fascinating push-pull energy, haunting but still hypnotic. I’m glad this one resonated with you — it’s a perfect fit for the Spooky Season Spin series. All treats, indeed! 👻
and your timing, as always, is impeccable! This Friday, ZTT is releasing two Super Deluxe releases:
Propaganda / A Secret Wish SDE 6xCD Deluxe Edition with unreleased tracks
and
Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Welcome to the Pleasuredome reissue [Deluxe 7CD+blu-ray, SDE]
It was actually a coincidence. I had heard those releases were coming, but I didn’t realize it was Friday. I have an Atmos setup, but I have not gotten into these Blu-ray audio releases.
I think if there is any release that would be worth trying for that Atmos setup, it y would be Pleasuredome! I can only imagine how amazing that would sound.
Paul, if you have an Atmos setup minimally compatible for a 5.1 speaker environment, you’re over the hump and on your way to a potentially life-changing music experience vinyl cannot provide. Start with the Roxy Music Avalon Blu-ray from SDE, who re-upped their stock for this highly prized album, which in the last 20 years often sold for hundreds of dollars when the SACD, and DVD-A surround discs sold out almost instantly. Get one from SDE before it sells out again. There are too many to turn you on to, but get what you like, or start with your favorite… Read more »
And as it happens, the 13th Life mix is one of the very few not included on the box set – although the extended version of this mix, Der Tausend Augen des Mabuse, is on there.
My own personal favourite mix is the ’12-inch master mix for Germany’ which finally saw the light of day on one of the compilations from a few years back (Noise & Girls perhaps?). Like 13th Life, that deconstructs the song into various elements and recombines them in different ways.
That’s the thing about Trevor Horn. He released sooooo many different versions of each song, and many of them were only available on specific formats. I think he could easily put together a 7xCD of “RELAX” versions alone.
That being said, it’s kind of annoying that ZTT is putting out these insanely massive deluxe editions that are still somehow missing some of the more obvious remixes.
This is for Axel, Jeff, DJ Paul, Jerome, and anyone who knows the number of Trevor Horn remixes for his artists: Back in 1984 I was visiting friends in San Diego when this AMAZING version of “Two Tribes” came on 91X (XETRA-FM/Tijuana). It was very different from the album/single version and had a “4-on-the-floor” bangin’ dance beat, unlike the Carnage, Annihilation, or Surrender mixes. I called the station and was told it was “the Revenge mix”. So I figured it might be on an import or the rumored cassette with a bunch of mixes. 40 years later I’ve never found… Read more »
WOW! THANK YOU! I must have listened to this song in all its magnificent versions a thousand times, but I’ve never seen the video…and it’s amazing! ZTT certainly knew how to promote their artists! And the video was directed by Anton Corbijn!?! WOW AGAIN! After seeing this video, I’m not surprised Depeche Mode and U2 snatched him up and kept him for their visual interpretations for the last 3 decades!
And as with all Trevor Horn productions, EVERY remix incarnation of every song is a unique masterpiece. I love everything that man has ever touched! I’m glad you decided to step into Propaganda territory. I have ALL their stuff, but would love to slowly replace my copies with your stunning transfers (just like your Depeche and FGTH transfers). Thanks for all you do!
You’re welcome, I really appreciate your kind words, it means a lot 🙂
Thanks, Axel! Isn’t that video incredible? Anton Corbijn really captured the dark, surreal essence of the song — it’s pure visual poetry. ZTT were absolute masters at creating a whole atmosphere around their artists, and Dr. Mabuse is one of their best examples. Once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to imagine the track without those haunting images!
I agree 100% with you. Now I will automatically imagine that video every time I listen to the song!
“The title references Dr. Mabuse, a fictional criminal mastermind from German cinema, first appearing in Fritz Lang’s 1922 silent film Dr. Mabuse the Gambler.” Actually Dr. Mabuse is a character invented by the Luxembourgish author Norbert Jacques who wrote the novel “Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler”. He also wrote “Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse” which only got published after WW II, but then there’s the Fritz Lang movie “Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse” from 1933. Lang also directed “Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse”. There’s also a version of the Propaganda song named “Dr. Mabuse (Die Tausend Augen Des Mabuse)”. I… Read more »
Great insights, thank you for that clarification! You’re absolutely right — Dr. Mabuse originated with Norbert Jacques’ novel before Fritz Lang brought the character to life on screen. I love that you pointed that out, as it really adds another layer to the song’s literary and cinematic roots. And yes, that “Die Tausend Augen Des Mabuse” mix is such an interesting nod to Lang’s The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse. I’ve also wondered about dropping “Doctor” from the title — probably just an artistic choice to make it flow better, but it does stand out! I’m with you on “Duel”… Read more »
Propaganda is another of the great groups produced by Trevor Horn, among which stood out: The Buggles, Yes, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Grace Jones, Seal, ABC, Pet Shop Boys and Art of Noise and Seal among others. The one who produced with Trevor Horn in the 80s, had guaranteed success, friends.
Trevor is certainly the unsung hero of the 80s (and 90s, …). It’s incredible how much he changed the remix landscape!
Here in Germany, the “Dr. Mabuse”-Movies from the 1960s (along with the Edgar Wallace films from the same period) enjoy cult status and are often shown on TV. The song by Propaganda (known here more by its short title “Dr. Mabuse”) is also one of those timeless songs that has lost absolutely none of its listening pleasure even today. It sounds like it was produced yesterday, catapulting me straight back to 1984 from the very first bar. Even more so than “Duel” or “p: Machinery” by the same group. Also particularly recommended is the entertaining 10-minute version of the German… Read more »
Thank you, Ingmar! That’s wonderful insight — I love hearing the perspective from Germany, where the Dr. Mabuse films have such a lasting cultural presence. It’s easy to see why Propaganda’s song resonates so deeply there — it perfectly captures that same sense of mystery and intrigue.
I completely agree, “Dr. Mabuse” still sounds stunningly modern — Trevor Horn’s production really was ahead of its time. And yes, the 10-minute German version “Das Testament des Mabuse” is fantastic — such a rich, immersive listen. Vielen Dank for sharing your thoughts and for stopping by! 🎶
“Why does it hurt, when my heart misses a beat!” PAUL!! I am thrilled by this post! I am so stimulated right now, covered in several layers of goosebumps. I’m almost afraid to look at my reflection right now. Who knows, a distorted reflection? Anyway, this song has long haunted me. I had the great pleasure of hearing it first through the groundbreaking remix service, Razormaid. The story I’ve heard is that when Joseph Watt and Art Maharg were in a record shop, Joseph asked Art about this record. (I think this may have been their first meeting). The query… Read more »
Wow, Jeff!! 🎃 What a fantastic comment — you’ve perfectly captured the spell this record casts! I love that you mentioned the Razormaid connection; that story about Joseph Watt and Art Maharg is new to me, and it makes total sense given how intricate and layered “Dr. Mabuse” is. That remix is absolutely one of their finest moments. You’re so right about Trevor Horn’s production — it’s pure cinema. Every sound feels deliberate, like part of a sinister film unfolding in your headphones. And yes, that video! The hooded figures, the mirror imagery, Claudia’s haunting presence — it’s gothic art… Read more »
Another band that i’ve been listening to (playing the deluxe edition of A Secret Wish many times), since i started about 7 or 8 years ago to re-acquaint myself with the music from my teenage years, both the hits and the known tracks as well those that ‘escaped my radar’ back in the days. Your site has really been an excellent and wonderful help in that regard, especially with all the maxisingles of so many unknown to me artists, or containing mixes i didn’t have like this one. Thank you for sharing this Propaganda maxi today Paul, it really made… Read more »
Thank you, Don! That really means a lot to me. I love hearing when the music I post helps reconnect someone with the sounds of their youth — that’s exactly what Burning the Ground is all about. A Secret Wish is such an incredible album, and those extended mixes really highlight how ahead of their time Propaganda were.
I’m so glad this one brightened your day a bit.
Thanks as always for listening and for being part of the BTG community — peace to you too!
Thanks a lot for all the different versions!
You’re welcome, Martijn.
Thanks for the release Paul. I was definitely late to the Propaganda party. I was pulled in by the SuperDeluxeEdition of the later xPropaganda release which is fantastic (on CD and blu-ray). I have not listened to the recent solo album by Claudia Brücken though. Probably need to give it a spin!
Cheers!
PS: Interested in ZTT or Trevor Horn? Check out the 3 double CD albums called The Art Of The 12″. Lots of gems in there.
Thanks, Mikey D! Glad you enjoyed this one. The xPropaganda release really was a wonderful surprise — they managed to recapture that classic sound while still making it feel fresh. If you liked that, definitely check out Claudia’s solo album when you get the chance — her voice still has that same haunting, elegant quality after all these years.
Cheers, my friend, and thanks as always for stopping by
Like you, Mikey, I got to the Propaganda party late. I’m not sure if KROQ ever played them, and if they did, they didn’t have a song that resonated with the market. When xPropaganda was bundled with the 7-CD and SDE exclusive Blu-ray with instrumental mixes, I had to check them out, and I really liked the entire album – so I pulled the trigger and purchased the bundle. Paul’s and everyone’s comments confirm I made a great choice.
Amazing, another great surprise for me. Thanks so much Paul 🙂
Best
Marcelo
You’re very welcome, Marcelo! 🎶 I’m so glad you enjoyed this one — always great to surprise you with something new. Thanks for listening and for being part of BTG!
That´s pure torture, Paul. You know I love EVERYTHING related to Trevor Horn. My latest order is/was the double feature of two SuperDeluxeEdition audio blurays by Frankie and Propaganda respectively. I just can´t wait, and while I´m waiting you gift us with this gem. Pleasure and pain, that´s what I say. 😉
Thank you so much, Paul.
Haha, I know exactly what you mean — the wait for those SDE Blu-rays feels endless! Trevor Horn’s work is absolute magic, and both those releases are going to sound incredible in high-res. Glad I could ease the “pain” a bit with this one. Thanks so much for the kind words and for sharing the excitement!
OH HELL YES.
I arrived way too late to the Propaganda party (shortly after the release of the Trevor Horn concert DVD), but A Secret Wish is now one of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you!
Oh hell yes indeed, David! A Secret Wish is such a masterpiece — once it grabs you, there’s no going back. I’m so glad you’ve discovered it, and thrilled this post hit the spot. Thanks for listening and for the awesome energy! 🎶🎃
Everything Propaganda did with Trevor Horn at ZTT was stupendous. Thank you!
Absolutely, Dean — I couldn’t agree more! Everything Propaganda touched during their ZTT era was pure brilliance. Trevor Horn and the band made such a perfect combination. Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words! 🎶
