Pet Shop Boys – It’s Alright (The Alternatives) (UK 10″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

A. Front

C. Poster

“It’s Alright” is the 13th single from Pet Shop Boys and was released in the UK by Parlophone Records on 26 June 1989. It reached number 5 in the UK and, as of February 2009, it is the Pet Shop Boys’ 8th best-selling single. The song was originally written and performed by Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge and came to the attention of Pet Shop Boys on a house compilation.

The lyrics list a wide variety of serious political issues in the headlines at the time (“Dictation enforced in Afghanistan, revolution in South Africa taking a stand…”), and then offers the positive message of the title—that on its “timeless wavelength”, “music is our life’s foundation”, it “shall last” and ultimately “succeed all the nations to come”.

On the 10″ single there are additional lyrics with Neil Tennant speaking: “there’s a boy standing by a river, there’s a girl lying with her lover, there’s a statesman standing at a crossroads, there’s a soldier polishing his gun”.

Also, it makes you wonder if Justin Timberlake or his art director, was inspired by PSB for 20/20 by the sleeve of the standard 12″ with Chris’s glasses, combined with the Chris Lowe suit and tie on Actually.

Thanks Paul for the great choice of song. The Music Lives Forever. Not that it will ever be alright, though this song sounds uplifting, the album version is like an uplifting/melancholy lullaby, contrasted with doubt, as Neil’s voice cracks “I hope it’s gonna be alright.” These are a couple of more obscure mixes. I remember the joy I felt when I first found this 10″ in a record shop. The extended version has never appeared on an official CD anywhere. I’m sure this is about as good a vinyl rip as one could hope to hear, and the best we… Read more »

Amazing. Thank you so much! I have never heard this particular extended mix, and the quality of your rip of the 10″ version is much more beautiful than the compressed version available on CD. Like hearing it for the first time.

I was sure Paul would come up with an appropriate and optimistic post after the tragic events in Paris, but unfortunately nothing’s gonna be alright. Europe will turn into a police state and the hate towards muslims and refugees will increase. Twice as tragic for the refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan which risk their lives on a dangerous trip to try to escape from wars to be safe in Europe. Also the bombings against the terrorist in Syria will increase and more civilian casualties will be unavoidable as on the territory controlled by the so called IS live 8… Read more »

It is not the refugees who are the problem. It is the governments who act like they are helping, but do it only for the profits of war. Follow the money and the power, and you will come to the conclusion that The People Never Had The Power (sorry Patty), and never will have. The police state has always been there. The illusion of freedom is what we are hoping for to get back. In the meantime, let’s dance on our graves, like we always have.

Wasn’t sure there was going to be a post today and then we get this. Awesome! Being from the UK and speaking from a point of view of someone from here i can state that recent posts have far exceeded posts from the previous weeks. Like many of your fans i come to this site 5 days a week but multiple times as we anticipate each new post. As much as we adore favourite one hit wonders (in our own territory) like the recent Taffy post, it’s our favourite 80’s artists like Pet shop boys, Dead or alive, A-ha!, Madonna,… Read more »

Yes Paul!! The Pet Shop Boys are always great to see on your site. You have those great mixes and remixes we all crave. Thank you for giving a guy who no longer has a turntable artists and songs he has certainly missed out on over the years. What you do is indeed a miracle.

Great mixes! As a huge PSB fan and CD/vinyl collector I love all your PSB posts, especially the ones with US & promo only mixes. What I’m really looking for are these 2 rare versions of One More Chance recorded with Bobby Orlando and released in 1984 in Belgium/Germany on 12″ and in US as 12″ promo. My Belgium release sounds absolutely terrible, actually never heard a decent rip.
