Paula Abdul – Knocked Out (The Shep Pettibone Remixes) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Knocked Out” is the debut single by American singer Paula Abdul, released on May 4, 1988. It was the first single from her debut album, Forever Your Girl.

The song was originally included on a Virgin Records sampler for the launch of Virgin Records America. In spring 1988, it was released as a single to test Abdul’s commercial appeal. “Knocked Out” proved to be very successful for a low budget single; it became a top 10 R&B hit.

In the UK, “Knocked Out” was released three times. It was Abdul’s first single and charted on September 24, 1988, peaking at a lowly #98. Following the success of “Straight Up” and its follow-up, “Forever Your Girl”, “Knocked Out” was reissued and peaked at #41 on 19 August 1989. Finally, after the huge success of “Opposites Attract” in 1990, the single was extensively reworked by Shep Pettibone and it entered the UK Top 30, peaking at #21 on July 28, 1990.

The Pettibone 12″ version of “Knocked Out” which was released in the UK as well as Germany was from the Shut Up and Dance remix album. While this version was not issued as a single in the United States, it did receive significant airplay and just missed the American Top 40, peaking at #41.

Tracks A1 and B2 are exclusive to this release.

Probably my favorite single from ‘Forever Your Girl’, after ‘Straight Up.’ Thanks for sharing!

Sadly this won’t download for me – I keep getting a message saying the files have been deleted! I love Paula… it’s no secret she doesn’t have the strongest voice however the quality of her tracks makes up for any vocal deficiencies. All of the singles from the first album are faultless – in fact it is a faultless debut album. I loved the remixes from this re-issue. The original release (SRNT 0-96661) also had two exclusive remixes which seemed to be common for Paula’s vinyl formats. My all time favourite tracks of hers is ‘Promise of A New Day’.… Read more »

Not my favourite PA single by far but the “Bassey Thing” almost makes me faint. The glasses in my cupboards go “cling” all the time 😉 . With Shep Pettibone you can never go wrong. Love all three remixes.

Btw, congratulations on your fabulous Christmas Collection the other day. “Winter Wonderland” by the Eurythmics is my all-time favourite of any Christmas carol. A dream.
Have a wonderful weekend, Paul, and everyone here in our panic room protecting us from all the madness out there. Be safe.

Thank you very much DJ Paul for another great remix by Shep Pettibone. It’s so strange how you, an American man, had to buy this single as an imported remix made by an American remixer, while usually it’s us, Europeans, who had to buy imported remixes made by the many American remixers.

I think it was pure greed, to be honest. Make us pay 3-4x as much for an “import” when often the USA promo-only 12″ had the mixes we were looking to buy. However, most often the imports had different artwork and those nice plastic bags. Sometimes the imports were 45RPM which was better quality. Often, however, the imports came in very thin paper sleeves which would cling to the 12″ like super glue and then give you an electric shock when you came within 5 feet of anything metal after getting the 12″ removed! 🙂 I joke but it’s not… Read more »

WOW! Thanks, Paul! I can’t wait to check out the exclusive mixes that were not released here in the USA! I have to ask, did you buy your non-USA 12″s back in the 80s or later when the internet came along and offered all sorts of wonderful websites to buy music from all over the world? It was very hard for me to find or even know of non-USA 12″s back in the 80s and early 90s, even when I went to college in a city that had a few record shops that catered to us djs. It wasn’t until… Read more »
