“New Attitude” is a song performed by Grammy Award-winning American singer, author, and actress Patti LaBelle.
In 1984, Patti LaBelle began taking part in films, participating in her first acting role in the acclaimed film, A Soldier’s Story. Around the same time, producers of the film, Beverly Hills Cop, were busy putting together a soundtrack for the film, and called on LaBelle to record two songs for its soundtrack. “New Attitude”, a song about a woman changing her outlook on life both emotionally and physically, was composed by Sharon Robinson, Jon Gilutin and Bunny Hull. The song was different from previous LaBelle recordings, which had been mostly pop ballads with occasional stabs at dance music and R&B, focusing on a synthpop direction. Prior to that, LaBelle had recorded a similar synthpop song, “I’ll Never, Never Give Up” from her first gold album, I’m In Love Again, in 1983. It was LaBelle’s first MCA single, released in January 1985.
The song climbed to number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot Dance Music chart in a remixed form. It also peaked at number three on the Hot R&B Singles chart. Patti LaBelle shot the first music video of her career with the song, which was shot at a fashion store.

Thank you Paul. This wasn’t a big hit in Oz even though the Beverly Hills Cop movie was huge.
The Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, just like Footloose the previous year, was quite the monster smash in 1985. Both Glenn Frey and Patti LaBelle benefited the most from it. Glenn got a second push to his album The Allnighter and subsequent singles that year(Smugglers Blues and You Belong To The City). Patti managed to score two multi-formats hits from that soundtrack, and that brought her back to the mainstream and paved the way for her massive #1 single On My Own and #1 album Winner In You the following year. Paul, this one is just great! Gool old Patti LaBelle, how I love her. This track rocks. I know you do not like our suggestions posted this way, but a quality rip of ‘Oh People’ (extended version and instrumental) would really really really be awesome 🙂

The Julian Mendelsohn remix is the second remix. Maybe you can combine the Richard Perry extended remix, plus the Richard Perry instrumental remix and the Julian Mendelsohn remix together in one post, THAT would be awesome Paul!
It’s one of her best 80’s tracks, I think. The lyrics should reach all places in the world suffering from poverty, idiotic wars or other injustices.
Hi Stefano I checked my copy of the JM Remix and looks like I will have to replace it. I rember when I bought it on Discogs last year the seller was dishonest with his grading said it was near mint but it’s not. I’ll just buy another copy. That’s why I wanted to check it before I promised that I would post it. It’s almost impossible to find. There are very few out there I don’t think it’s on youtube either. I’m working on getting a copy.

Oh nice suggestion, Stefano! Oh People is such an overlooked gem in the 80s. I guess the shoes left by On My Own was too big to fill for many listeners!
Great song, one of my favorites 80’s tunes. Never get a Hi Q rip of the full Maxi Single until now. Great 12″ version, still wonder wich one I’ve heard, the Extended or the Club Version. The good news is that I have both of them now !!!
