BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1990
“Use It Up and Wear It Out” is a song by Odyssey that was released as a single in 1980. It spent two weeks at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in August that year, but failed to make commercial success in the United States.
In 1990 British vocal duo Pat & Mick, consisting of popular radio personalities Pat Sharp (born 25 October 1961) and Mick Brown (born 28 November 1962), both of whom are from London released a cover version of the song produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman reaching #22 on the UK singles chart. The song also received club play in America where it reached #81 on the Billboard dance chart.
The royalties from their record sales were donated to Capital FM’s ‘Help A London Child’ charity.

Paul, I have to say that I really dug the B-side here too. I have the 12-inch at home, but totally forgot what a cool sample track this was. I love the Batman samples from the soundtrack album they used on this. Oh, the days when they could pretty much sample anything they wanted. I miss those crazy times. Thanks for showcasing this track. It’s so good.

I am so stupid. The Technotronic bassline copy totally eacsped me.I loved Technotronc at the time and I love the UIUAWIT bassline. I know SAW used to plot their tracks on big club hits but I totally missed this.
But hey. I still love it.

This song is such a guilty pleasure for me. I even count it among my top 10 favorite songs of all time! Too bad Pat & Mick weren’t included in the upcoming Stock Aitken Waterman box set.
I actually do remember hearing this on the radio a handful of times way back when it came out in the US.

most of the SAW stuff is way to cheesey for me, but I respect them as great producers, also spinned all there productions, they were always in the charts. But to much copying goin’ on, @ the beginning in this track are some synth sounds almost identical with Technotronics Pump Up The Jam. But (another but), there’s one big exception in their production work, Roadblock. I remember all DJs went crazy about some mixes of this track, it was even power-played on an alternative music radiostation. LOL
There was an other goal, besides artistic value a lot of the times 😉 Good to read it was projected in a charity kind of way. I guess that’s why the strange occurances on otherwise not so suportive stations of the s.a.w.-style maybe?

Nathan the reason is because a lot of my records are imports from outside the US they tended to press at 45 RPM while in the US it was usually 33 RPM. That is why sometimes you will hear people say that imports sound better. Hope that answered your question 🙂

Most of the time the German / JP editions are much better then the US edition.

Recently found the CD Single for this a few months back and it had the single version and 12 inch version but I also remember Hot Tracks doing a version of this too. Fun song yeah I would love to see more Pat & Mick vinyl mixes this is the only one I really know 🙂

How bizarre. I’ve very recently had a friend request accepted from Mick and when i gave my thanks i mentioned that i wished someone would release a P&M compilation with the 7 and 12″ versions. This was about 3 days ago! Always liked this but MUCH prefer ‘Let’s all chant’ so i have to ask, do you have that to post? Do you have any 7″ singles of P&M? Any future post regarding this artist would be appreciated!

I wish the US version, released on the Charisma imprint as an EP (it’s basically the “Let’s All Chant”, “Use It Up (And Wear it Out)” and “I Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet” extended versions, and 3 other tracks [On the Night, You Better Not Fool Around, and Star Teaser]) would have seen the light of day on CD, or even iTunes. Still, thanks for this, DJPaulT! I’ve got the one full-length CD (http://www.discogs.com/Pat-Mick-Dont-Stop-Dancin/release/1004088 ) but the remixes are edited and segued together.
