BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1990
“Use It Up and Wear It Out” is a song by Odyssey that was released as a single in 1980. It spent two weeks at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in August that year, but failed to make commercial success in the United States.
In 1990 British vocal duo Pat & Mick, consisting of popular radio personalities Pat Sharp (born 25 October 1961) and Mick Brown (born 28 November 1962), both of whom are from London released a cover version of the song produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman reaching #22 on the UK singles chart. The song also received club play in America where it reached #81 on the Billboard dance chart.
The royalties from their record sales were donated to Capital FM’s ‘Help A London Child’ charity.

Good afternoon, the download link is no longer available …
Paul, I have to say that I really dug the B-side here too. I have the 12-inch at home, but totally forgot what a cool sample track this was. I love the Batman samples from the soundtrack album they used on this. Oh, the days when they could pretty much sample anything they wanted. I miss those crazy times. Thanks for showcasing this track. It’s so good.
Jeff
I am so stupid. The Technotronic bassline copy totally eacsped me.I loved Technotronc at the time and I love the UIUAWIT bassline. I know SAW used to plot their tracks on big club hits but I totally missed this.
But hey. I still love it.
My fave Pat & Mick release!
Mainly because you can’t hear Pat & Mick singing 😉
but truly… I love the production
The guy on the right looks like he has a good ass. :-0
This song is such a guilty pleasure for me. I even count it among my top 10 favorite songs of all time! Too bad Pat & Mick weren’t included in the upcoming Stock Aitken Waterman box set.
I actually do remember hearing this on the radio a handful of times way back when it came out in the US.
Enjoy! Rob :0
Prefer Odysseys original version, also
most of the SAW stuff is way to cheesey for me, but I respect them as great producers, also spinned all there productions, they were always in the charts. But to much copying goin’ on, @ the beginning in this track are some synth sounds almost identical with Technotronics Pump Up The Jam. But (another but), there’s one big exception in their production work, Roadblock. I remember all DJs went crazy about some mixes of this track, it was even power-played on an alternative music radiostation. LOL
There was an other goal, besides artistic value a lot of the times 😉 Good to read it was projected in a charity kind of way. I guess that’s why the strange occurances on otherwise not so suportive stations of the s.a.w.-style maybe?
I had suggested this one a while back but I don’t think you had heard of it. Glad you finally got on the Pat & Mick bandwagon! S*A*W really did an amazing job on all these Pat & Mick charity singles. PS: Watch the video on YouTube for some pure 80s cheesy goodness. Have a great weekend, PaulT!
I had heard your suggestion Paul and was just waiting for the right time to post this one 🙂
Thank you. Love it. I remember a friend recently shared a version of this song from Odyssey, and I thought, “that’s the song, but not the artist I remember.” And then I saw this post and had a duh moment. I remember looking at this single in the music store, and not having enough money to buy everything I wanted to get that day, so I put this one back. I am happy to hear it again with quality encoding. A lot of the record stores where I lived had plain paper jackets with or without the artwork yours do, with… Read more »
Nathan the reason is because a lot of my records are imports from outside the US they tended to press at 45 RPM while in the US it was usually 33 RPM. That is why sometimes you will hear people say that imports sound better. Hope that answered your question 🙂
Absolutely answers my question, thank you. Of course, I see your collection includes Belgium, Amsterdam, Germany, UK, France, AU, NZ, so yes, I agree. Imports sound better.
Most of the time the German / JP editions are much better then the US edition.
Thank you!!! You are the best!
You’re welcome Johan 🙂
I love this SOOOOO MUCH. Thank you!
You’re welcome Conner 🙂
Wow. I was amazed to see this on your site (which I’ve followed for a while) but also delighted.
I love this version – and also the b-side. I listen to both often.
Thanks for validating that!
Rob.
You’re welcome Rob 🙂
Recently found the CD Single for this a few months back and it had the single version and 12 inch version but I also remember Hot Tracks doing a version of this too. Fun song yeah I would love to see more Pat & Mick vinyl mixes this is the only one I really know 🙂
Yes Keeganskylar Hot Tracks did a wonderful remix of this one 🙂
I don’t think I know this song, but what I do know is that the dude on the left has one of the most magnificent mullets I’ve ever seen. Up in the NE that flowing mane was referred to as Ice Hockey Hair. Have a great weekend Paul and everyone else here at BTG!
I wonder if he had a poster on his wall from Leif Garrett (when he was already 20-ish 🙂 or had a girlfriend at the time, wearing the same hair, but with a perm?
Have a nice weekend Mothloop 🙂
Have a great weekend too Mothloop. Paul’s readers are the nicest people around!!!
Jeff
You do the same Jeff, even though it’s half over!
Oh Paul, this is so awesome! Thank you! Can we please request the other Pat and Mick singles too? And agree with NKelly, can we have the 7″ versions too? I love the B-side of the “Let’s All Chant”12 inch, called “On The Night” and only have it on vinyl. It would be fabulous if you could post that one too! Thank you again for all your great work.
As mentioned to NKelly I will see what I can do 🙂
How bizarre. I’ve very recently had a friend request accepted from Mick and when i gave my thanks i mentioned that i wished someone would release a P&M compilation with the 7 and 12″ versions. This was about 3 days ago! Always liked this but MUCH prefer ‘Let’s all chant’ so i have to ask, do you have that to post? Do you have any 7″ singles of P&M? Any future post regarding this artist would be appreciated!
I will see what I can do Neil 🙂
Well done DJ Paul,
it’s just Disco Friday today with this post.
I’ve been waiting for other disco posts for a long time
hoping to find Troiano with his “We all need love” (1979), but it didn’t happen.
if you got it I’ll be waiting!
…
I like Stock Aitken and Waterman productions in the 80s and also this track of the 90s!
THANKS!
You’re welcome BE.D12” 🙂
Ah, the disco remake!! It’s so cool that you have posted this on your “Disco Fridays” Paul!! What a cool number this is. My wife Karen loves this record so much. I actually like it better than the original Odyssey version. The energy and the almost Technotronic feel that it has. It’s a very nice record to bring in the weekend Paul. You have quite the knack for making our Friday’s here on BTG something special (Well, actually, every day is special here dear Paul!!)!! I’m elated over this one because I know your rip is going to be excellent.… Read more »
I agree there is a Technotronic vibe to this one. I remember when that style was big it sounded so different 🙂 Have a nice weekend Jeff 🙂
I wish the US version, released on the Charisma imprint as an EP (it’s basically the “Let’s All Chant”, “Use It Up (And Wear it Out)” and “I Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet” extended versions, and 3 other tracks [On the Night, You Better Not Fool Around, and Star Teaser]) would have seen the light of day on CD, or even iTunes. Still, thanks for this, DJPaulT! I’ve got the one full-length CD (http://www.discogs.com/Pat-Mick-Dont-Stop-Dancin/release/1004088 ) but the remixes are edited and segued together.
You’re welcome Silver Blue. Thanks for the info 🙂
