Ollie & Jerry – Electric Boogaloo (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“Electric Boogaloo” is a electro-pop song by American music duo Ollie & Jerry. Released in late 1984 as the lead single from the soundtrack to the film Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, the song reached number 45 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Detroit natives and prolific session musicians Ollie E. Brown and Jerry Knight first collaborated as the duo Ollie & Jerry on the soundtrack to the 1984 breakdancing-themed film Breakin’. The first track of that album, “Breakin’… There’s No Stopping Us”, was released as a single and reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1984.

Following the success of this record, Ollie & Jerry were asked to contribute music for the Breakin’ sequel, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. The term “electric boogaloo” refers to a dance style of the same name. The duo recorded the track “Electric Boogaloo”, which was released as a single.

Although the “Electric Boogaloo” single was less successful than its predecessor (not charting on Billboard”s Top 40), the Breakin’ 2 soundtrack itself did reach number 25 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and number 52 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Thanks Paul. I don’t actually know this, but it’s got that great classic Electro sound. A little Prince in places too.

Fantastic stuff – forgotten gem – haven’t heart this in ages! “Breakin – Ain’t No Stoppin..” can be found on various compilations but this one is a rather rare occurence. Glad to see this nice little track again!

This one takes me back to my ‘poppin’ days! Thank you so much Paul!

This also reminds me of the STAYING ALIVE 12 inch Japanese single I donated a few years ago, I hope you find time soon to rip that puppy, it’s a great one! I also included a Rick Dees comedy album from the 80s. Would LOVE to see those here, cost me a good grip I remember that Stayin’ Alive. Beautiful 12 inch single! Thank you Paul!

Great Paul, thank you for this forgotten track! Ive been a huge fan of Breaking movies ( i’m a breaker myself). There were published 2singles from this sountrack: this one and I belive in the Beat ( u already ripped). Sadly I Don’t Wanna Come Down by Mark Scott ( the best track in my opinion) has never been released on 12” mix

Thank you so much Paul for these 2 Ollie & Jerry rips. Especially the one of yesterday sounds great. As you know I always love the Jellybean remixes from the 80s. He had a very special sound. Have a great weekend.

Wow Paul, this is a great follow-up to yesterday’s offering. To be honest, I can’t remember this one at all, but I am excited to have it in my digital collection. I love how you try and fulfill an artist’s discography. Most excellent. After hearing yesterday’s jam, I thought it reminded me of an electro version of the disco chestnut, “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.” Not that the melody was the same, but with what they are singing about. An interesting parallel. Thank you for this week’s of records Paul. As always, you are a bright beacon of light in… Read more »
