Olivia Newton-John – Heart Attack (US 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. front

“Heart Attack” was one of two new songs recorded for the 1982 (Double Platinum) greatest hits package titled Olivia’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2. The song was the first single released from the album. The success of “Physical” led to an international tour and the release of her second hits collection, the double platinum Olivia’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (No. 16 Pop), which yielded two more Top 40 singles: “Heart Attack” (No. 3 Pop) and “Tied Up” (No. 38 Pop). In 1983, Alvin and the Chipmunks covered the song for their TV series episode “Angelic Alvin” (with new lyrics created for the episode).

The song features American saxophonist, composer, arranger, conductor and bandleader of the west coast jazz/jazz fusion ensemble the L.A. Express Tom Scott on horns. An innovative music video directed by Brian Grant recieved heavy airplay on MTV.

Even though there are no remixes or edits of “Heart Attack” I still wanted to post it for those of us who love hearing these tracks in their vinyl glory. I also wanted to bookend it with yesterdays “Tied Up” post. Olivia was an important part of 70’s & 80’s pop music paving the way for artists like Madonna and Taylor Swift. Olivia’s music video’s were innovative and pioneering winning the first ever Grammy for a long form video album in 1983 “Olivia Physical”.

Hey Paul. Thanks for posting this!

This was _the first_ record I had, given to me with my first record player when I was single-digit years old. As a result my copy of the 45 is scratched all to hell! Glad to finally get a quality replacement version! (I recall having no luck in finding it for download in the major online stores.)

I really appreciate your work!

Nice to have these two 7 inches. Hope you have lots more 80’s ONJ in the future.
We still are waiting for a re-rip of ‘Suddenly’ with the rare B-side ‘You Made Me Love You’.

DjPaulT, Thank you so much for this post! This is one of my absolute favorite Olivia songs! I had hoped so much she would sing this and Twist of Fate (my other favorite) when I saw her at the Flamingo last month. But unfortunately she didn’t perform either of these songs. She just renewed her contract for this year, so I’m hoping maybe she will add some new songs to her show, hopefully this will be one of them. I’m very disappointed that there isn’t a 12″ version of this song too. It’s so great to share my love of… Read more »

Oh, how I wanted this to be a #1 in 1982!!!
It was the new single after the success Physical era.
It was the Hot Shot Debut on the Hot 100.
It claimed the biggest leap then within the Top 40…from #39 to #13.
It was only a matter of time Olivia would scale to the Top!
And then, it stalled at #3, with three other singles took turns to leapfrog over it to hit the Top 2 – Up Where We Belong, Truly and Gloria.
Sigh!

In some respects a bizarre title for a song, but such a great song, the lyrics describing a heart attack, but in reality a song about love at first sight!

Thanks PAul.. 🙂

This is such a fantastic song Paul. And you’re right, Olivia did pave the way for other female artists. I love how you acknowledge her brilliance. It was so great growing up back in the day. I remember one of my earliest birthdays. I wanted her “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Please Mr. Please” singles. I loved how she exploded in the 80’s and I loved her “Physical” video. Great fun.

Hiya Paul, I have some great memories of this song which was EVERYWHERE when it came out. And you are right about the lack of an extended version. I’ll have to do an extended edit of this track. Thanks for bringing this back.
