More Site Problems

Hi guys,

I have once again been contacted by my hosting service Hostgator. This time the issue is sharing files on their servers and using too much of their disk space. I have been using Hostgator since 2012 and they have never mentioned a breach of my service agreement with them. The only solution(s) is to remove all of the downloads that are currently available on the site and start using third-party file-sharing services like We Transfer etc. which would mean none of the old files would be available any longer. The other solution is to move to another hosting service or close the site altogether. I will be looking into my options and keep you informed as best I can. Remember you can always follow BTg on Facebook for updates as well.

Regards, Paul

I noticed a link to one of your uploads (nuance featuring vikki love – loveride) on another music sharing forum, ( fhttp://forum.funkysouls.com/t/electro-68473_349#p10233350 ). I think it is the height of rudeness to share links without reuploading. May be it is time to consider registration and log ins, & maybe find a way to track members downloads, so that the culprits can be dealt with.
I’d hate to see this valuable site, and all your good work lost.

Of course with registration & login , downloads can be automatically restricted, so even if someone posts your music to another forum, then anyone wishing to download has to be registered here.

Yikes, sorry to hear about the problems. Unfortunately without MP3, this is where we part ways. I can appreciate FLAC, but since I primarily use my phone for playback (Apple), this becomes problematic. Pristine fidelity has never been an issue for me, as I’m more about the music. There’s been a lot of music I’ve discovered from this site and for that I’m eternally grateful. You’ve also digitally provided music that I own, for which I didn’t have a digital copy. Thank you so much for that! I’ve followed you since the ONJ days. Your blog has brought me much… Read more »

My first time commenting, but as I have used the site to find some tracks for radio use that were not available from my usual sources, I thought I might check in with a few thoughts. (I also went back and re-read the comments on Paul’s previous two posts on this, and have taken all of that into account.) First: 16-bit FLAC at 44.1 is pretty much a standard across most of the platforms I look for files on. It is especially prevalent in the Usenet binary newsgroups. While there are some “super purists” who would prefer 24-bit and/or higher… Read more »

I just made a quick search and I got the 15 best “unlimited web hosting”, where HostGator was one of them with unlimited disk space and $4.76 as a monthly starting price, and therefore I find their “too much disk space usage” argument a bit flawed to say the least. I know many websites that link to files and some of them use cloud hosting where you need to answer CAPTCHA challenges to download or have slow downloads for non-registered users, but I also know some websites which have direct downloads. I know one particular website where you can search… Read more »

I would remove the 24 bit flacs as that alone will save a lot of space, also i would remove the mp3’s as people can simple encode to whatever codec they want with the flac files.

I digitize radio shows and post over at Voodoo Wagon blogspot. My policy is to start the life of a file as FLAC, and not worry about what it gets converted to… (as I can’t control that at all). At the same time, most of what I listen to is mp3@320. That site has multiple “authors” and is a bit of a free-wheeling anarchy, so there’s no “rule” about bit rates.

I think you should get rid of all the mp3 and flac in 16/44, and host only flac 24 /96. BTG is well known for the quality of the files.

You could capture 24 bits FLAC at 44.1 kHz. Then we can convert to 16 bits according to our tastes (I don’t like dynamic range compression).

ditch the FLAC. it’s appreciated, but MP3 is an easier standard for everyone to use.

Just downgrade from 24 bit to FLAC and save a ton of data. People would have to deal with it (and probably most wouldn’t care).

Yep, this, absolutely agree, rid the 24 bits, and mp3 files, and just host the 16 44 flacs. 🙂

I think one big issue is the 24 bit files. That can run from 250-360 MB so just a few people visiting can use a GB of data in no time. There may be other underlying motives on their side. Either way this is terrible and I wish you the best of luck sorting it out. I really appreciate your insight here so I would be really sad if you shut this thing down completely.

Hi Paul, have to say I’m grately saddened with the recent happenings of burning the ground, a:) the removing of all the great archive stuff; I only download something when I think about it, and not always straight away, and often it’s berried back in the archive a few years. but b:) mainly the issues you’re having with your host. I think if not staring all of us in the face, the most logical solution would be a seedbox and torrents to share distribution and data burdon, so you don’t have to carry all the costs associated with hosting, and… Read more »

Hi Paul,

So sorry to hear about the recent troubles.
I was reading Patricia’s comment above, and I think she has a point.
If you removed all the FLAC files this would reduce your total storage size by 90%.

I personally love having the option of FLAC files, but would gladly forgo that option to keep the site running.

Cheers,

John.

So sorry to see you having this trouble Paul, I have followed, and loved Burning The Ground for many years, I love to see all your music and sleeves, you put so much hard work into it, I do vinyl transfers myself of all my old 80s records as it’s the only way we can get them digitally as they are all long forgotten gems, so know how time consuming it all is.

Your site is a joy to me, and many others i’m sure, I hope you can work it out.

Hi Paul! This site has been my home page for years. That’s how much I love and appreciate what you do! These files are genuine pieces of history, many of which would be lost if you hadn’t archived them. Might I suggest using torrents and a seedbox to link to your files, instead of, or maybe in addition to, whatever method you eventually choose? It’s a bit of a learning curve to figure out, but once you do, you can just host the tiny torrent files on your site instead of the massive music files. At the very least, it… Read more »

Maybe your service providers have legal concerns and try to cut you loose on technicalities?

It would be a real shame if you had to close. I hope you find a solution with Mega or other hosting service, Even using the torrents method is fine.

My first time comment! Hi Paul! Firstly, apologies for being long overdue but I must say that this site you’ve built and managed is absolutely incredible. Really cool! I’m actually not fully into FLAC yet but am very, very impressed with the sound quality of your work. I’ve enjoyed browsing your site and am quite motivated to get a new PC (about time!) with a larger hard drive, etc and hopefully a good second-hand hi-fi system. Nathan up there might be the best choice for now but Ima gonna drop a plug for my hosting service holeinthewallhosting.com. I’ve been on their Atomic (ie smallest) plan for 15+ years. I’ve never had a problem with site connectivity. I don’t know if their largest package suits your needs but you might be able to negotiate with them. As others mentioned here, my life would not be the same without this site. I really hope you resolve this and my gut says that your current providers are just not being fair anymore. Think of how massive the www is and your site’s bandwidth and overall usage pales in comparison to so many other sites out there. Obviously they run just fine. If hostgator is now accusing you of copyright issues and no longer wants you to host files on their servers then so be it and just bite the bullet and move providers.
