Burning The Ground Exclusive 1982
“No Regrets” is a song originally recorded by Tom Rush in 1968. Numerous cover versions have been recorded including Shirley Bassey and Olivia Newton-John.
In May 1982, Scottish musician Midge Ure released a cover of the song as his debut solo single. “No Regrets” was also produced by Ure, who said “I got tired of doing it for others, so I decided to do it for myself” and was co-produced and engineered by John Hudson.
Reviewing for Record Mirror, Simon Tebbutt described the song as “a brilliant mixture of the big emotional American ballad … with the kind of clean-cut and almost cold European precision we’ve come to associate with Mr. Ure.”

Great version by Midge Ure, although I wouldn’t of expected anything less from him.
I remember the much later single Cold Cold Heart from 1991 too.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Hi Paul, WOW! Glad you got this, and have restored it beautifully. I am a huge Ultravox (with midge ure), and Midge Ure fan. I have about 95% of everything they have ever done on cd and vinyl. I am going through a huge collecting phase and buying up every single version, release, and promo I can find. My midge ure collection is pretty complete, so I had most of these singles a long time ago. There were also some really great compilations of his music and Ultravox (done by Vinny Vero), so some of these songs have been restored.… Read more »
Paul, this doesn´t really belong here but I was so impressed that I wanted to share the fun fact with all of you. So feel free to delete my comment 🙂 Visage had been struggling desperately, desperately for almost two years to get their album released when thanks to the success of the Vienna album and single Midge was able to talk the Ultravox management into finding a label. This was Polydor, New York, who loved the album and paid an advance of $125,000. Let me quote from Midge´s autobiography “If I Was”: “The album was 90% complete so I… Read more »
Have I mentioned that I saw Midge Ure play live two years ago? No regrets was part of his setlist, of course, next to several Visage and Ultraxvox songs and Rusty Egan’s fantastic song “Glorious“. I love Midge’s voice and his craft as a songwriter and producer. I’ve been reading his autobiography for a week or so and boy he certainly had to fight for everything, comibg from a dirt poor background. Hats off to everything he has achieved.
Thank you for this wonderful post.
Have a great weekend, Paul and Jeff and all of you wonderful people out there.
One of my favourite songs ever. I usually prefer the original to the cover version but for “No regrets” I must admit that Mr. Ure’s version is much better. Unfortunately it wasn’t remixed for the 12″ single. Thanks again for the 3 Trevor Herion posts which was another great discovery for me. Please keep the obscure 80s coming. Have a nice weekend 🙂
This looks great Paul. Midge Ure is a fantastic musician and I’m happy to be checking out this early single by him.
Have a great weekend Paul, Song And Dance and everyone else here.
Jeff
Thanks Paul!
I love Midge’s solo work, his Ultravox stuff, Visage, and BAND AID too, of course!
If you can take a look at some of the other Ultravox singles and more solo Midge too, I’m sure it would go over big here.
Thanks again!
