BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
Re-Rip Newly Remastered!
Originally I posted this one on October 6, 2011. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon Super 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!
“Obsession” is a 1983 song originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des Barres in 1983. This version was prominently featured in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, most notably in a scene in which Christopher Atkins bumps and grinds in Lesley Ann Warren’s face in sync with the rhythm of the song. The song was featured on the film’s soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts. That version was also featured in the theatrical trailer to the 1986 film 9½ Weeks, starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger.
In 1984 the synthpop/New Wave group Animotion covered the song. The song hit number six in the United States, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinctive video that received heavy rotation on MTV.

THIS is why we love you
I love Animotion version – had no idea it was a cover
Spending some time off going through all your posts to see what I have missed = this is brilliant – different to version I know but so interesting to hear.
Never stop DJ Paul 🙂
Cool – thanks!
At last I can listen to it in a decend quality!
Thank you very much!
Really, I have been looking for a decent qualith of ”Obsession” for years!
🙂
There were not a lot of pop or dance tracks before this that were so openly talking about sex, were there? I mean, lots of songs talk about sex, but always couched in metaphor. This one is the first I remember to ever use the phrase “sleep with me”, which was as brazen as it got until “I Want Your Sex” in 1987. Although I do love this version, I like the Animotion version better, as it has more oomph in the vocal delivery… the dispassionate vocal in the original isn’t bad, but for a song about desire, I think… Read more »

Is Stefano psychic? How is he so sure you’ll be posting a re-rip tmw? 😉
Mike he is making a guess I suppose. Right now I don;t have a re-rip planned for tomorrow. I havn;t decided on my post yet 🙂
Every since I stumbled onto BTG, I was always curious about this record. Thank you for brining it back into the limelight. I love Animotion’s remake, but this is the original and it originally got a great review in the old trade publication “Dance Music Report.” Paul, you are the preservation perfectionist and I laud your efforts. Such care and respect you have for the past, the obscure and the most coveted.
Big Hug!!
Jeff
Big hug back to you Jeff. I think I like the Animotion version just a little better. This one seems more stripped down.
Great re-rip, once again. Looking forward to tomorrow’s re-rip.
Thanks Paul!
Havn’t decided on tomorrow yet Stefano. I have to throw in new posts too. Got lots of things I want to post.
I bet you’ve got years of new material!
Well, you can count me in. I’ll applaude you for the years to come!
Tomorrow it’s Disco Friday, there’s got to be a perfect disco track waiting to be re-ripped, I assume 🙂
