BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
“Dr. Beat” is the first international single released by the American band Miami Sound Machine led by Gloria Estefan on their first English language but eighth studio album overall Eyes Of Innocence. The single was released worldwide in 1984 becoming a top success across Europe where the album impacted the charts with this hit.
“Dr. Beat” was not quite as popular in the US as some of their later singles, only peaking at number 15 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. However, it has become one of the group’s biggest international hits, reaching the Top 10 in Spain and peaking at number 6 in the United Kingdom.
The song has maintained popularity through inclusion on a number of 1980s retrospective albums. It also became popular again in 2005 when dance artist Mylo mashed the song up with his hit “Drop The Pressure” to create “Doctor Pressure”, which became a hit single in its own right.
The single was certified Silver by the BPI in the United Kingdom for its sales of 200,000 copies and Gold by the ARIA in Australia for its sales of 35,000 units.

Hi, can you please re-upload Dr. Beat by Miami Sound Machine?
Great track! Thanks 🙂
You’re welcome Woz!
thanks, hoping to see more gloria estefan/msm in the future!
You will Feanor. Have a nice weekend 🙂
Indeed! MSM infused the Latin Pop Dance element into the English Pop Mainstream. But America didn’t buy their branding the first time round. Ironic I was introduced to this Miami group via the British charts in 1984. IT was climbing side by side with Elton John’s Passengers. I think the US radio weren’t ready for Latin in Pop until Julio Iglesias enlisted Country Legend Willie Nelson, and then R&B Diva Diana Ross to score two Top 20 hits in 1984. (Julio had already hit #1 in the UK three years before with Begin The Beguine!) MSM had no such collaborations… Read more »
I always thought that Dr. Beat was a huge hit. I had no idea that it did not chart on the Hot 100 until researching it for this post.
Thanks Paul, loved to dance to this when it first came out and still love it. I’m going to treasure the instrumental. In hindsight, it was at this point that Gloria and Emilo introduced a latin sensibility into our english language pop culture which continues to grow in strength – we’re forever grateful to them.
Erwin

This was a huge hit in Iceland back in 1984…remember having 2 copies mixing back and forth between A & B side and the crowd going wild.(since then lost my both copies)
Thanx a bunch Paul, a great 80’s posting.
