Melissa Manchester – You Should Hear How She Talks About You (Australia 12″ Ltd. Edition)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. Front

Re-Rip Newly Remastered!

Originally I posted this one on December 27, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon Super 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“You Should Hear How She Talks About You” is a 1982 Top Ten single performed by Melissa Manchester from her album Hey Ricky.

First recorded by Charlie Dore for her 1981 Listen! album, “You Should Hear…” was written by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow. Arif Mardin who produced Manchester’s recording described the track as “a real departure for Melissa because it has a new wave dance quality and she had been known for her ballads”, Manchester having reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 with the ballads “Midnight Blue” (#6) and “Don’t Cry Out Loud” (#10) and the previous Manchester/Mardin collaboration “Theme from Ice Castles” also being a ballad. Mardin continued: “But music is music. You can’t turn your back on new formats or styles.”

“You Should Hear…” reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1982 to become Manchester’s highest charting record. It would also prove to be Manchester’s last Top 40 hit (her 1983 single “Nice Girls” would peak at #42). The track would earn Manchester the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the year 1982, besting nominated performances by Laura Branigan, Juice Newton, Olivia Newton-John, and Linda Ronstadt; Manchester had previously been nominated in that category for the 1979 release “Don’t Cry Out Loud”.

A #10 A/C hit, “You Should Hear…” also gave Manchester a hit in Canada (#5), New Zealand (#20), and Australia (#4). In Australia, it ranked as the #25 single of 1982.

I am an active contributing member at the DISCO CONNECTION blogspot. In fact I just posted 4 Santa Esmeralda albums along with some other goodies. Hey Dj Paul!

Hope your’e well. For some reason can’t seem to download from your blog..? It comes up with username and password. I just subscribed but haven’t received instructions pertaining to either a username or password? So it’s a little confusing to say the least and was hoping you could clarify further. Great blog you have here too. Just want to be able to access the music.

Cheers

Sean :))

I’ve tried this all day long (9 hours). No dice. Hopefully the issue will clear up. Seems like a server issue. I’m trying to get the 24/96 version.

Thanks for this re-rip, Paul. Such a great pop song! I’m sure the audio quality will be better and brighter!
It is really strange that after the biggest hit of her career, Melissa failed to reach the Top 40 again. I too agree about No One Could Love You More. Why record companies never employ people like us to do the job? LOL! Some choices are so obvious and they failed to deliver…

Paul – this is so good! Have always enjoyed Melissa’s work. A pity that Arista records didn’t do a lot more promotion for her at the latter end of her career – given they had their attention centred on Whitney Houston. If they’d released a 12″ version of “No One Could Love You More Than Me” from her Emergency album … it would have been a bomb!

I agree. I am always making up new compilations to add to thumb drives to play in the car and at work – this song always ends up included.

Paul,

Thanks for this, nice sound, you kept all the energy in it while preserving the analog-ness(this is a song that could have gotten harsh fast if it got too digital sounding). Great work! As usual.

Nice mention of “Nice Girls” too (a personal favorite of mine)….could never find a 12″ on that one. Good song, nice production, should have made Top 40.

Dear DjPaulT, I’ve recently discovered your site and I can’t thank you enough for your dedication, hard work and intense detail to preserve dance mixes from vinyl records. I also love the fact that you are re-posting tracks that weren’t available for a couple of years. I am overwhelmed by what’s here. Mixes that I never knew were available, that somehow escaped through the cracks or that have never appeared on compact disc before. I am so grateful to you for this extremely generous service. I promise to donate very, very, VERY SOON!!! It’s only the right thing to do… Read more »

This single didn’t make the Dutch charts in 1982. Too much American pop perhaps, I really don’t know. In the 80’s I always listened to the US Billboard Top 10 in a weekly Dutch radio show, where they’d play around 15 seconds per track, ending up playing number 1 in its full length glory. Melissa didn’t make it to number 1, so I never heard the whole song. But after hearing a snippet of 15 seconds I liked it right away. Didn’t get a hold of the single though, because it never has been released officially in the Netherlands. This… Read more »

Yes…I was very excited to hear this 12″ mix as I have never known of an “extended version”…man, all they did was add in a copy of a 32-beat breakdown. 🙁 But this was early (April) 1982 when this track was released so I guess we shouldn’t have expected much. But boy, starting around 1983-1984, true extended mixes and remixes were released all the time.
