“Mathematics” was the first single and the title of Melissa Manchesters only MCA Records LP. With this single Melissa collaborated with the legendary Quincy Jones who produced the track and pop star Robbie Nevil who also was a co-producer, writer and did the songs arrangement. The 12″ remix was done by John “Jellybean” Benitez. It seamed that all of the right elements were in place for a hit single, to re-start her career sadly this was not to be, the song only peaked at #74 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was her last chart single. The album “Mathematics” struggled to reach #144 on the US album chart.
The b-side “So Full Of Yourself” is a non-lp track and was co-written by Tom Snow who has written many hits for Olivia Newton-John including “Physical” and “Heart Attack”..

Thanks. Melissa Manchesters was a one-hit-wonder outside of the US with “Thief Of Hearts”, her only world hit. I know that she had more hits in the US. Nice to hear them too. This song is very cool, very 80s style, but it’s not powerful as “Thief Of Hearts”.
Thanks so much for this one! After Olivia Newton-John and Sheena Easton, Melissa Manchester was my favorite artist in the ’80s. Her output during the first half of the decade was phenomenal. I remember being very excited when I saw that she had a new album coming out in 1985. When I first heard the song “Mathematics,” I was left scratching my head. It seemed a very odd song for Melissa Manchester to be performing. I liked it, but it was certainly different from what she’d done on Arista Records earlier in the decade. I’m not surprised it did so… Read more »
David G, I think we are the same person in terms of favorite 80s artists!
Thank you for this! I love songs about academic subjects, like Pylon’s “Read A Book” or The Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part II”
You’re welcome, Grant. I like both of the tracks you mentioned 🙂
Awesome!
Hi Paul, I love this post! I’m a huge fan of Melissa 80s output—this, “Energy,” Thief of Hearts,” No One Can Love You More Than Me,” “Nice Girls, and “You Should Hear How She Talks About You”—she released some super high quality dance pop in the first half of the decade and doesn’t get enough credit.
She had some great 80s output that was pretty much overlooked.
I am overjoyed to get this Paul!! Melissa Manchester was such a talented vocalist! I’m very excited because of all who was involved with the single too. A lot of talent here; sadly, I can’t believe it didn’t hit the dance charts. Thank you again for being the place to go for overlooked and/or forgotten 12-inches. So many of these records deserve another listen. Cool that you’re bringing an earlier posting back from the BTG Graveyard!!!
Jeff
With all the talent behind this production, I am shocked it basically went nowhere. Guess people liked her better for her earlier work not really sure why it was rejected.
Thanks Paul for adding another obscure 80s post. This time it’s a song I already have in my CD collection. That’s the 2-CD set Mathematics – The MCA years released in 2018.
You’re welcome, Daniel. Too bad Real Gone Music has a pretty bad reputation for their CD re-issues.
Thank you Paul!! When you posted this years ago sadly I didn’t keep the file, lol… Thanks for restoring it!! This single & album should have been a bigger hit.
You’re very welcome, Retro Hound. I never bought the LP but enjoyed the singles I especially like the b-side track on this one 🙂
I have questions about that cover. 🙂
LOL it is an interesting one for sure 🙂
What?!?!?! That cover SCREAMS “IT’S THE 80’s!!!” LOVE IT! 🙂
Duran Duran – Nite Romatics???
The download file is “niteromantics16.rar”.
I am aware of this trying to fix the issue.
Don’t worry. Things happen… 😉
Should be working now 🙂
Thank you!!!
