Madonna – Angel (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

REQUEST

“Angel” is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her second studio album Like a Virgin. It was released on April 10, 1985 by Sire Records as the third single from the album. Written by Steve Bray and Madonna, it was one of the first songs developed for the project and, according to Madonna, was inspired by a girl who is saved by an angel, and she falls in love with Him. “Angel” was released as a 12″ single with “Into the Groove” in some countries and charted likewise. A music video was initially planned for the release, but was later cancelled. Instead a promotional video comprising clips from her previous videos was released in the United Kingdom.

Musically “Angel” consists of three chord ascending hook, which serves for the verse and chorus. It has vocal harmonies beneath the main chorus and the lyrics repeat the angel-like image of Madonna’s saviour. Critics gave mixed review of the song, with one group denoting it as a classic while the others felt it was sub-par compared to the other Madonna singles. “Angel” became Madonna’s fifth consecutive top-five single on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top of its dance charts. It was also able to reach number-one in Australia and the top-five of the charts in Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. Madonna has performed the song only once, on her Virgin Tour in 1985.

“Burning Up” (Alternate Album Version) is used for the Vinyl edition of Madonna – The First Album and has a duration of 4:48. This version is actually the original album version, before being replaced with the final mix (also used in the video version). This version also appeared as the b-side fof the 7″ and 12″ versions of “Angel” in European markets.

I thought I had downloaded this, but it looks like I had mistaken it for the an other Angel you had posted. Is there any chance you’d be able to repost this one? Thanks so much for everything that you do!

I always remember when I was 13 or so, she was on a Dutch top 40 show with Holiday, and introduced as ‘ This is Madonna and she wants to become famous, and quickly too’. And it so happened as we all know. This one is one of my favorites. I have all her 80s cd singles ripped including this one and I cant believe how many of them I like! Angel, like Dress You Up are magical live versions. It is as if you feel being part of the crowd, being part of history, somehow in the same way… Read more »

Paul –

My old DJ roommate had this version of ‘Burning Up’ on his Madonna LP [I had the cassette, and by the time I got the LP the shorter version was on it] and used to play it while DJing back in the day [1983]. He finally hid it so I would not wear the track out 🙂 Never was able to find a copy of the original LP and a big thumbs up for you posting this!

Thank You, DjPaulT!!! Agree with you TW (Thanks, Paul. If you’re about to do with Madonna 12-inchers what you just did with Tina Turner, this will be very exciting)

Even though Angel was a Top 5 smash for Madonna, I so wished that Sire had the sense to release Into The Groove as an A-side single in the USA. One of two mysteries regarding Into The Groove. The other is the lack of any 12″ remix when it did get the A-side treatment. Madonna had an amazing 1985 in the UK with eight straight Top 5’s! As for Madonna’s debut album…besides the longer Burning Up, I also preferred the edgy original cover. The sleeve for the re-titled one seems almost like an afterthought and grabbing any leftovers from Madonna’s… Read more »

Yes I too very much like it!!!! I think it good turn in her career. The truth many people yet didn’t estimate it. Probably they didn’t get used to hear such music from angelic Olivia 🙂

My 3 fav albums are “Madonna/The First Album,” “True Blue” and “Bedtime Stories”.
And a personal question: Paul how are you liked Olivia’s latest experiments with those remixes on “A few Best Men”? 😉

One more ‘thank you’ to you, Paul! I like those songs! Never heard Extended Dance Mix of ‘Angel’ before. And this alternate version of ‘Burning Up’ is great two. When I listen to Madonna’s early songs similar to these I much harder start to hate her latest album MDNA… Where are those 80s????!!!!

LOL maybe she’ll resurrect it from the dead for you on tour, like she did for “Borderline” in ’08…but hopefully this time she doesn’t ruin it, by playing it on guitar!

In italy (my country) this 12 single has Into the groove as B side.
I was amazed by this B side…actually much better song than A side, Angel.

I do not believe this version of Burning Up has ever appeared on a Madonna CD. There are some CDs, such as the German CD of Maodnna – The First Album, that incorrectly list the timing at 4:48, but they all play the standard 3:41 video version.

Thanks, Paul. If you’re about to do with Madonna 12-inchers what you just did with Tina Turner, this will be very exciting.

By the way, could you recommend a site with quality vinyl rips of Madonna’s unreleased-on-CD 7″ edits and remixes? I know that’s not your theme here. I keep thinking they will be released digitally, but no luck I guess.

Thanks Paul – I do miss the original version of BURNING UP on the debut album on vinyl. It is such a pity that the reissues on CDs (including the later international version of the album with a new cover) is the newer shorter version lasting only 3:45.

Have a Happy Easter!! ~ Chwee (Sg)
