Machinations – Cars & Planes (Australia 7″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1989

“Cars & Planes” was the fourth single taken from the third and final album “Uptown” by Australian synthpop band Machinations. “Cars & Planes” failed to chart while the album reached #50 on the ARIA Charts the main Australian music sales chart.

The group had become a popular band on the Australian touring circuit. Their activities were curtailed in April 1989 when a hit-and-run car accident left bandmate Fred Loneragan with a broken neck, multiple cuts, bruises, and concussion. He spent several months recuperating in the hospital. Initially, fellow band members intended to continue whilst Loneragan recovered, however, the group disbanded as various members left to join other local groups.

Wow, Paul, thanks for another cracker of a vinyl rip, and especially for fulfilling another one of my requests. 🙂

Thank you Paul!! I know Machinations from the Ruthless People soundtrack (No Say In It), which is a great track. I’ve heard of this single, but not too familiar with it. To echo DJ XREY, I love the 7″ singles. Don’t get me wrong, I love the 12 inchers too, but the 7 inchers have unique remixes and single edits not found elsewhere. Thanks for keeping us on our toes! P.S. I like the new artwork! The eye in the sky!

I should mention Machinations ’80s KROQ hit “Pressure Sway” (AUS #21): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-DR0H-hO6o

Still lovin’ the new “Psycho Killer” DD logo from their excellent new album Dance Macabre!
I’m glad to see some rare 7” remixes that don’t make it to a 12”. When songs are chosen for a music video and single, they’re almost always “sweetened” by editing, adding overdubs, or remixing in some way. Rarely do they get included on the parent album or on future compilations, where the album version is usually chosen for convenience, though we get accustomed to the single version from radio and video airplay.

Great idea to attach a YouTube video to the posts… great way to preview a track to see if a track scratches my itch.

Thanks Paul for the videos! So many became MTV classics when other elements like unique intros dialog, and other enhancements to a single helped make a hit

Thank you for yet another obscure, but EXCELLENT 80s song. I love Australian 80s music, but I’ve never heard of this band before.

Terrific single, Paul!! It’s new to me but I really, really like it! Excited about Mark Berry and Andy Wallace’s involvement here! Wallace has worked with John Robie on several projects, like C-Bank and Quadrant Six’s Electro classic, “Body Mechanic” too! I’ve seen his name on a lot of dance music projects. Mark Berry as well! Yeah, I’m a audio nerd because I study the record labels.

Good song, Paul! You can always pick them!!
