BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981
“Draw of the Cards” is a 1981 single release from Kim Carnes’s album Mistaken Identity. The single reached #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #49 on the UK singles chart. “Draw Of The Cards” failed to emulate the chart success of its predecessor, “Bette Davis Eyes”, missing out on Top 10 status in many of the countries that song had reached pole position.
The music video for the song is directed by Russell Mulcahy, who previous directed the “Bette Davis Eyes” video.
The “Special Long Version” is exclusive to the European releases of the 12″.

Nice! I almost bought this off of Discogs the other night. Now, I don’t have to. Thanks Paul!
The reason why there had never been a 12″ version of “Bette Davis Eyes”, as incredible as that may sound, is that the whole thing had been recorded live, in one take, no overdubs. So all they could have done might have been to let the track run a little longer in the fade-out.
This had been a rare thing even in the 1980s, but I guess neither singer nor producers had thought that this song might become such a massive hit that a 12″ would be needed.
Very interesting Andy Simon, thank you for sharing.
“I took them into Leeds rehearsal studio in North Hollywood for three weeks and we rehearsed everything. Oddly enough, the night we were rehearsing ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ was the night John Lennon was murdered. Someone came into the studio in the middle of rehearsal and told us. Very weird. Anyway, we cut ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ totally live at Record One: every note, the percussion, even the [electronic] Synare and Kim’s vocals; there was never an overdub. I think we did three takes and the one we used was take one. I did a rough mix the night we cut it,… Read more »
Awesome info! I had no idea that “Bette Davis Eyes” was recorded in one take. Amazing. It surely sounds polished!
Regardless, thank you, Paul, once again, for this Kim Carnes rarity. It’s another “forgotten” Top 40 hit!
Another rare rip, and an excellent one I’m sure! Thanks Paul! Quite baffling that after the monster hit that is Bette Davis Eyes (#1 single of 1981 and #2 single of the 80s decade), this didn’t hit Top 10 or even Top 20. When Kim was reigning for nine weeks atop with Bette Davis Eyes, one of the songs she kept off the summit was Being With You by Smokey Robinson. Smokey originally had written that song with Kim in mind to record it, because he was impressed by her Top 10 cover of his song, More Love. But Kim… Read more »
Ric thank you for the trivia I did not know that about Smokey Robinson Too bad there is not a 12″ of his song I love it.
You’re welcome, Paul…you know me and my trivia LOL!
And I agree…so many early 80s classics lacking in that extended/remix format…there isn’t one for Bette Davis Eyes as well right?
That’s correct Ric there was not a 12″ version of the original Bette Davis Eyes, just the remixes that were released later on.
Ric, “Being With You” did manage to reach #1 in Cashbox and I think it also went to #1 on Billboard’s R&B chart. Surprisingly, it didn’t go to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, either. As far as this Kim Carnes song, I used to have the 45. I think it’s a great song that unfortunately gets overlooked frequently where 80’s music is concerned. It was really kind of a bizarre song, maybe a little too strange for listeners in 1981, as evidenced by its chart position. Another big thank you to Paul for giving it some well-deserved attention and… Read more »
Yes Dan, I agree Draw Of The Cards doesn’t quite fit into the pop single mold back in 1981…doesn’t have the obvious commercial hook in the verses or even chorus. With regards to Bette Davis Eyes, much as I love the single, I’m glad Olivia’s Physical got to enjoy that 10-week record for the 80s on its own, ’cause I love that more. Being With You not hitting #1 on the AC charts can be surprising. But not when you see that the AC charts is topped by acts like Kenny Rogers, Anne Murray, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Air Supply… Read more »
I think this was one of the first records that I bought as a kid! Either this was the first one (bought the 7″ though) or Robert Palmer’s “Looking for clues”… Sad to say the don’t exist anymore 🙁
Oh boy, that brings back memories… Thanks for putting this up! 🙂
You’re welcome Peter!
Hello Dj PaulT, do you have Kim Carnes “You make my heart feel faster” you can share with us? Thanks for all the good music you pick to post in your site. Great quality rips and great info too. Keep up the good work!
My mistake: The title of the song is “You make my heart beat faster (and that’s all that matters)”
It’s always a pleasure to listen to Kim’s music! Thanks a lot dear Paul!!
You’re super welcome Spring!
One of the best Kim Carnes’ songs… EVER! Thank you for such a clean rip!
You’re welcome Chris I had been planning to post this one for a long time but I had issues getting it to sound like I wanted. But finally here it is and it turned out pretty good 🙂
