BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1990
“The Sex Of It” is a single by American latin pop band Kid Creole And The Coconuts. Released as the first single freom the album Private Waters In The Great Divide. Written and produced by Prince.
Initial tracking took place on July 29, 1987, at Paisley Park Studios, a few weeks after the studios opened for recordings August Darnell (a.k.a. Kid Creole) recorded his own vocals over the basic tracks in late 1989 or early 1990.
The album was completed and scheduled for release when Prince submitted the song in late 1989 (which he had promised when meeting Darnell in Europe during the Lovesexy Tour), and the record company delayed the release to include the song.
“The Sex Of It” peaked at #19 on the US dance chart and #85 R&B. In the UK the single reached #29.

Thanks so much for this, Paul. I also really love your 12″ of The Coconuts’ “Indiscreet.” Do you have the 12″ of “Did You Have To Love Me Like You Did?”? Great version that I can’t find anywhere. Any Kid Creole 12″ are most appreciated, especially the ones that haven’t shown up on CD. (Your rips do sound better.) Also, the original Machine 12″ of “There But For The Grace Of God Go I” would be awesome. Funny that they censor the lyrics about popping pills and smoking weed, which is on the Kid Creole version, but then that version… Read more »
thank you very much for all your efforts to celebrate Prince.
Paul, I loved this one so much. I must admit though, I loved the radio version the best as it was the more “Kid Creole sounding” mix. Wish it was longer. The other versions are nice, and the groove is hypnotic, but I love the original more. Prince just slays me with his talent. He just amazes me with what he can do. Thank you TONS for this one Paul!!
Jeff
Thanks Paul! How about My Male Curiosity 12” Thanks!
Oh you already have it. My bad hehe.thanks!
Thanks for exposing me to this, Paul. I’ve never been a big Kid Creole fan, so I never knew he received a Prince song.
Would you have the ‘Endicott’ 12-inch?
Please, thank you!
One of my all-time Kid Creole favorite. Thank you for sharing this with us Dj PaulT!
Oh Yes! Kid Creole is so great. A lot of their great 12″ mixes made it to those CDs that are now out of print.
But I’ll take a DJPaul high-quality vinyl mix ANY day.
I am so happy you posted. A great nod to Prince, but I hope you’ll add more Kid Creole if you want to.
Love Kid Creole & the Coconuts, since their Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places-album, come to think of it. Lost them during the 90’s, but the first albums and their 12”s have never really been out of rotation with me. Nice to hear this combination of the Prince-sound and theirs (the radio-version). I Missed out on this release back then. The extra mixes are so 80’s. Full of quotations of dance classic licks, sounds and samples. (And ooh,..Eric Kupper.. I love his Havana dramaticcaly – must play that one tight after this..) Thank you Paul, you picked a right one for… Read more »
The Sex Of It was initially the original first single from Prince’s 1988 Lovesexy album, subsequently ‘Alphabet St.’ was recorded closer to the albums release. Other ‘purple factoids’: Prince, inspired after recording the song created the video one early morning according to Alan Leeds of whom Prince woke up in the wee hours to help him film it. Also, a HiFi Prince version exists, it’s spectacular aside from being a very humorous funky song. I’m heartbroken about Prince’s passing. I had the good fortune to meet him once, ask him a question, be around a video shoot seeing him work,… Read more »

Always great to see Kid Creole and the Coconuts 🙂
Thanks Jay65 🙂
I was a UK club DJ when this was being promoted and the record company sent out white label promos credited to just KC&TC. It was appearing quite high in DJ chart returns until it was finally unveiled as the the full artist credit during a second mailout of 12″ finished copies.
Brings back happy memories.
You’re welcome Carty thanks for sharing your comment 🙂
