Karen Finley – Lick It! (Belgium 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

Explicit Lyrics

“Lick It!” is a 1988 12″ single recorded by American performance artist Karen Finley. Produced by Mark Kamins “Lick It” is a solid house track set to Finley’s poet musing. Soon after this single’s release Finley released a full studio album titled “The Truth Is Hard To Swallow” however “Lick It” did on appear on the LP. Soon afterwards, she became a highly visible symbol of US Congress’ efforts to deny NEA (National Endowment For The Arts) grants to potentially offensive material, as Senator Jesse Helms blasted Finley in 1990 for a piece in which she smeared chocolate over her nude body. When the NEA refused her application for a grant because of the content of her work, she and three other similarly affected artists sued; a federal district court declared the so-called “standards of decency” provision unconstitutional in 1992, a decision upheld four years later by the Circuit Court of Appeals.

Wow! First Tales Of Taboo and now Lick It! – A Karen Finley BTG double whammy! (a triple whammy actually, if you include your earlier SOC post). I can’t have heard this for over 25 years and yet I always marvel at the function of the brain that recalls every single line of the lyrics (which are pretty unforgettable, lets face it!).

Drop That Ghetto Blaster! Ah, I hope S’Express paid some serious royalties for that one (though the original Karen Finley track itself samples the start of Rose Royce’s ‘Is It Love Your After’ intro so who knows!)

thankyou for the Karen Finley 12″s. I only really knew her from the Sinead O’Connor single, so it’s great to hear something I’ve never heard.

I will ALWAYS CONTINUE TO SAY THIS: Paul!! I am forever grateful to you for all the love you show us music lovers!! WOW!! Again, a Karen Finley single I don’t have. I do know the song, courtesy of her album and a Razormaid! remix, but to have the original vinyl here ripped in such stellar sound with all the versions included and the great cover art, boy oh boy, I am so lucky! I just adore and love what you do. Your tastes are PHENOMENAL and run a serious varied spectrum of AWESOMENESS!! Phew! I feel the rush coming… Read more »
