Originally posted December 20, 2011
“I Do What I Do (Theme For 9½ Weeks)” was a single performed by Duran Duran bassist John Taylor released in February 1986, the song was his first solo singing performance during a hiatus in Duran Duran’s career and also features Michael Brecker performing saxophone. It was the main single released from the 9½ Weeks Original Soundtrack.
“I Do What I Do” was co-written by Jonathan Elias, Michael Des Barres and John Taylor, after Des Barres was approached about writing a song for the movie’s soundtrack. It was originally intended to be sung by Lisa Dalbello, but she bowed out at the last minute and John decided he could do the song instead.
The video features John Taylor in a tuxedo, singing the words while watching a private screening of the movie 9½ Weeks. It was directed by Taylor himself.
“I Do What I Do” reached #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #42 on the UK Singles Chart.
It was also nominated in the 1986 Golden Raspberry Awards for “Worst Original Song”, but lost to “Love or Money” by Prince.

Love these side-projects Paul. Thank you. 🙂
Doing this thing called whatever the F’ I want has never failed and it never will.
That is how DJ Paul posts up and it is a winning formula.
Don’t go changing.
Thank you Paul.
Oh my I have ALWAYS loved this track. To date, still John’s best solo song or side project.
Lost as worst song to one of Prince’s many stellar b-sides ?!?!?! WOW, Love Love Or $ too! I mea come on now, 1986 had songs that actually were really terrible and these are the songs they pick on!?! Stupid raspberries… Speaking of Prince- been grooving on his Welcome 2 America “album”…. Not to mention Duran’s INVISIBLE is too fantastic for words…can’t wait for their new album! Green vinyl on order!
“The final cut” is very eehr… difficult to listen to, at least the first 5 minutes. The song itself is a prototype 80’s rocker. Great that you posted this record, Paul. As always thanks for the fantastic work!
The film “9 1/2 Weeks” was an obsession of mine during the time of its release and for a long time afterwards. Also, the music from the movie became the soundtrack I would frequently play because the music was as hot as the erotic images I saw on screen. Thank you Paul for re-posting this awesome track. I know it’s going to sound superb! Hoping you might someday be able to re-rip some of the other tracks that were on the album, Fingers crossed. In the meantime though, I will be relishing this blissfully bombastic track by John Taylor!!!
Jeff
I have never seen the movie so I need to put it on my list. I think I have posted some of the tracks from the soundtrack previously I will check. 🙂
Someone asked online recently if this was Grace Jones singing it……
DJPaulT, this is indeed a great piece of music history!
You are an ace as an 80’s music curator.
I wasn’t around your blog around 2011, but the sound we have here is simply awesome.
Thank you, and get my best regards from Costa Rica.
Thank you, Jonathan 🙂
You rock Paul. Thanks.
Thank you, Omar 🙂
My dear departed friend, Jason Corsaro, worked on this project, miss him! The drum sound he created for Powerstation is still coveted by recording engineers….
I love the work he did with Duran Duran as well as great production work.
