BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
Please take a moment to remember the victims of the shooting in Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub. 49 people lost their lives 1 year ago today.
“Age of Reason” is a song by Australian pop rock singer John Farnham. It is the first single from his album of the same title, released in 1988, and written by Todd Hunter and Johanna Pigott.
“Age of Reason” was composed by Todd Hunter and partner Johanna Pigott, who had previously written the song “Rain” for Dragon and played together in the XL Capris. Pigott said, “You write songs and you’re surprised at what you wrote sometimes, and you think, goodness, is that me, did I do that? It’s not something you consider of perfect taste or anything, and someone records them and you think that’s fantastic. It’s a really exciting and thrilling thing.”
“Age Of Reason” peaked at #1 on the ARIA Charts the main Australian music sales chart.”Age Of Reason” also charted in several other countries including New Zealand #4, Germany #20, Netherlands #43 and UK #87.

Thanks so much for this one Paul!
Do you happen to have the 12″ of “Pressure Down”? Many thanks!
Love this track and remix, would you have his single Beyond The Call with the very rare Blow By Blow (Extended Quake Mix) by any chance?
This I have been looking for years!
Hi Paul, some of your posts i have seen without your credits on israbox.media. Do you know this??
It’s a day late but just want to thank you for this wonderful post to memorialize what happened a year ago in Orlando. This is a nice way to honoring those lives with some kind of action.
Haven’t listened to this song in many years, Paul. It’s part of the memories of London, Autumn 1988, during a semester of college across the pond.
Thanks for the smile.
One small correction: The 5:08 version of “Age of Reason” on the B-side is actually the original album version, not a cut-down single version. 🙂
Just wrote what was on Discogs and written on the labels.
Which is odd, because the actual 7″ single lists a slightly-shorter running time (4:58 instead of 5:06) — which matches what’s on the 12″‘s B-side label, but the actual running time of the track on this 12″ single is 5:06, which is what’s listed on the album.
Given that it’s only a few seconds’ difference, I suppose it’s always possible they just called it the “single mix” on the 7″ and 12″ singles because… reasons…? Record companies move in mysterious ways. 🙂
I only think of him for ‘You’re The Voice’ which was lovingly featured in the movie ‘Hot Rod’ but I remember the video and it was too slow for me but experience it now it’s a really good song. Thanks for post.
You’re welcome Mill City 7 🙂
Hey Paul,
Thanks for great post, I didn’t have this in my collection.
Thanks again.
Kent 🙂
You’re welcome Kent 🙂
One year has goney and I would love to say the world has become less mad. But that would not be the truth as we all know.
Dear me. As Freddie said, “Is this the world we created?”.
Thank you for this great song, Paul. Although this is certainly NOT the age of reason… 🙁

You’re welcome Song_and_Dance 🙂
Thanks Paul for both, this wonderful song and the reminder. I have this single on CD. I also love “When the war is over”. John Farnham has such a strong voice. He is still one of my favorite singers. He ruled the charts in Germany a few years earlier with “You’re the voice”. I have great memories of that time. It would be fantastic if you could also post the remix of “Pressure down”.
You’re welcome Daniel. I have also loved his collaborations with ONJ too 🙂
I assume you’ve seen the video of the two of them performing AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock ‘n’ Roll)”, then? 🙂 (For some reason, I never would’ve pictured Olivia Newton-John doing heavy metal, but she and Farnham pull it off brilliantly.)
Thank you for remembering the tragedy of last year Paul. We shall never forget.
Looking forward to this song. You always choose the perfect song for our enjoyment.
Jeff
Thank you Jeff :0
Great song by Farnham. Good to post tbis one to get more people acquainted with this fantastic singer. What a voice!
Would you have the ‘Pressure down’ 12 inch with the excellent and rare single remix? That’s another very strong track.
Thanks for this post Paul.
I don’t have “Pressure Down” Stefano but I will add it to my want list.
The single remix is far better than the album version. It’s just a freakin’ good song.
Thanks Paul! One of his better songs for sure.
Nubben
You’re welcome Nubben 🙂
Thanks Dj P the only good song he ever did lol. we got labasted with his music and got sick of it here. but i do <3 this xxxxx
He did not get any love in the US which is a shame he is agreat artist that Australia is lucky to have 🙂
Thanks Paul, and for the Orlando reminder. I came across this Farnham release by accident way back then. No airplay here where I live and yet I was even more surprised to see that he sang with The Little River Band! I have his two releases from the 80’s now and both are excellent. Thanks again.
You’re welcome RA 🙂
