Joe Jackson – Steppin’ Out (Europe 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

“Steppin’ Out” is a song written by Joe Jackson, originally included on his 1982 album, Night and Day.

The song is about the anticipation and excitement of a night out on the town. Released as a single in August 1982, it became Jackson’s biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit in the U.S., peaking at number six. It was his second biggest hit on the UK Singles Chart, also reaching number six. Only “It’s Different for Girls”, which reached number five in the UK in 1980 did better. The music video for the song, directed by Steve Barron, featured a housekeeper pretending she was a Cinderella figure. It was filmed over one night in the St. Regis Hotel in New York during the summer of 1982.

“Steppin’ Out” eventually earned Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

The song was produced and mixed by David Kershenbaum who also produced and mixed some Duran Duran’s early work.

Thanks for this!

You know what needs your treatment next? The 12″ of Joe’s “You Can’t Get What You Want (‘Til You Know What You Want)”, which features a smoking Jellybean remix and dub version that has never been released on CD to this day.

I remember sitting outdoors in a cafe in Honolulu in 1982 and hearing this album (and Steppin Out) and it blew me away. I purchased the vinyl on that vacation and treasured it since. I followed Joe for a couple of albums, but nothing touches the Night & Day album. Thanks for the post.

Never heard this version with the fade in on the start of the song.
I got a 12”demo on this song with 8 measures of beat only on the start (no fade in) and its lenght is 4’23”-

The perfect blend of pop and jazz! And even after 30 years, it still sounds timeless and classy!
Despite peaking only at #6, it was such a long survivor in both the Top 40 (15 weeks) and Hot 100 (27 weeks) that it ended the year as one of the biggest hits!
Joe kept coming up with the goods…Breaking Us In Two, Be My Number Two, Happy Ending (one of my favourites) and of course, You Can’t Get What You Want (with that Jellybean remix).
Let’s not forget his gorgeous tinkling on Suzanne Vega’s Left Of Centre.

Almost 30 years since its release and still one of the greatest tunes ever. I remember when I saw video for this track for the first time sometimes in 1983. Damn, am I so old?
Thanks, another unforgettable post.
