Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987
“Flames of Paradise” is a 1987 single by American singer Jennifer Rush a duet with Elton John. The song became Rush’s first Top 40 success in the US and a hit in Europe, although smaller than expected in the UK after predictions of it reaching number one by Smash Hits and Number One Magazine.
The song reached #36 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in July 1987, and #59 in the UK. The song did much better in Switzerland where it reached #7.

Thanks for this DJpaul!
Such an amazing artist and perfect for International Women’s Day! Thank you!
Surprised to know Power Of Love never made the US top 40. One of the great pop ballads of the 1980s. I’m sure it would have been a big hit if Whitney Houston had done a cover version.
Updated reply.
I guess Jennifer Rush got royalties from the Celine Dion version but I’m sure Rush would have preferred her original version getting to number 1!
This is a new one for my ears, great combination of two fine singers. I’m surprised it didn’t chart higher too.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome, Marco 🙂
I’ve learned a few interesting facts, thank you Paul!
I had always thought Jennifer was German, and “Power Of Love” was *THE* hit. “POL” was certainly the hit here (Australia) but I didn’t realise it wasn’t even Top 50 in the US.
You’re welcome. I always thought “Power Of Love” was a hit for her in the US too but it only reached #57. Celine Dion went to #1 in the US with the song in 1994. Jennifer Rush only had two charting singles in America.
CBS held off on releasing “The Power of Love” in North America, feeling the disc was too European, whatever that means…. lol… It’s amazing that it topped the charts all over the world, became the biggest-selling single of the year in the UK, and the ninth best-selling single of the decade … I guess she should’ve released a country version of it for the US market!
MANY THANKS PAUL!!! How I have been waiting for this one!! Such a good song. Pure pop bliss. Quick question, is this the version with “Promo” printed on the labels or just a gold promo stamp? Thanks!
You’re welcome. My copy as shown in the images has a gold promo stamp on the back over the bar code. Also, the track list is incorrect on the sleeve but as shown above on the labels.
Thanks for confirming Paul!
Ooh, you know I have a soft spot for Elton John!! Thank you so much! I agree with Jeff, it should have been a much bigger hit in the US. Such an underrated single in Elton’s catalog. And oddly enough this was Jennifer Rush’s biggest chart showing in the US as far as I know. She also deserved better. I’m excited for this in the best ‘Paulity’. Thank you so much Paul!! You scratch us right where we itch!
You’re welcome, Retro Hound glad I could relieve that itch 🙂
Such a shame that this track didn’t become a much bigger hit. I am loving it and want to thank you Paul for introducing it to me. I love these Elton 12-inch mixes. Wow, what a great find!!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff so happy you like it 🙂
The video is hilarious. I can’t decide if it’s great or awful. 🤭
The song is quite catchy. Jennifer Rush has a wonderful voice.
Hey Music_Fan,
I am perplexed that this song didn’t get higher in the US. Elton and Jennifer are a winning combination. Her voice is superb and duetting with Elton John is a great collaboration!
Have a tremendous weekend!!
Jeff
