BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1977
DISCO FRIDAY!
In 1977, Jeff Lynne released his first solo single, the disco-flavoured “Doin’ That Crazy Thing” backed with “Goin’ Down to Rio”. The song was intended to start a bew dance craze that Lynn had thought up while taking a short break from being Electric Light Orchestra’s frontman. The 12″ single’s sleeve came with instruction how to do the “Crazy Thing”. Despite ELO’s high profile at that time, it received little airplay and failed to chart.
This single would mark the first time that Lynne’s named appeard on a release by itself.

IMO, nothing compares to Jeff’s ‘Video!’ as a solo single. As dated as it is, it’s much more fun. I just wish there was more than a 7″ and picture disc of it. I’d love an extended mix of that. 🙂
Didn’t know about that song. Fantastic. You always surprise me with your vinyl gems. Thanx!
Paul!!
A very cool post. I love your musical tastes. They always surprise me and leave me feeling so good. You are tremendous pal.
Jeff
I love what he did with Olivia in Xanadu, and this is a new Discovery (to quote an ELO album) for me!
And with a dance-steps instruction included! Now that’s a Disco Friday post!
Thanks Paul!
O–M–G. Thank you!
Love this guy, have just about everything he ever released (The Move, ELO, Solo etc..)
I have this in my archive, but this is a much better rip..
Thanks Paul..:D
LOL… thanks Paul. Never heard about this song of him.
BTW:
Thanks for your hard work on doing this blog.
You’re very welcome Ziv 🙂
Huh? Jeff Lynne going disco? This certainly is a rarity, because it never showed up on any compliation, I think. Don’t believe I know this song, but I’ll find that out within a few minutes…
Have a nice weekend y’all BTG’ers!
Hi Stefano. This was Jeff Lynne’s first solo record and it has never been released in any other format. Jeff was trying to start a new dance craze obviously it didn’t work. A fun track though. Have a nice weekend 🙂
A great Disco Friday post, that’s for sure!
Enjoy your weekend.
ELO was no stranger to disco. Last Train To London & Shine A Little Love were much more discofied than these solo tracks from Lynne.
