INXS – Need You Tonight (Liebrand Remix) (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1988

“Need You Tonight” is a song by the Australian rock band INXS, released as the first single from their 1987 album, Kick, as well as the fourth song on the album. It is the only INXS single to reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It also achieved its highest charting position in the United Kingdom, where the song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart; however, this peak was only reached after a re-release of the single in November 1988. On its first run on the U.K. charts in October 1987, it stalled at No. 58. It was one of the last songs recorded for the album, yet it would arguably become the band’s signature song.

This 12″ is the 1988 reissue (mainly aimed at Europe and especially the U.K. where the single had previously stalled at No. 58 in 1987) which incorporated new artwork and packaging plus remixes Ben Liebrand. There was also another more widely available 12″ and CD single with remixes by Julian Mendelsohn. The Liebrand Remix was only released on 12″ in the U.K.

Thanks Paul for posting this.
INXS Kick album is my favourite of theirs, followed by The Swing.
I’ve bought many versions and boxsets of this particular album.
Always love your quality vinyl rips.

I’m Looking forward to Duran Duran’s New Album “Danse Macabre” out October 27th 2023, same day as Simon Le Bon’s Birthday.
A new single very soon!

The entire “KICK” album was – and still is – a fantastic album, front to back! And I love all the remixes, since the songs already had such dancefloor-friendly grooves. I wish they had done some remixes of Mistify and more remixes of Devil Inside! Can’t wait to compare your transfer to my CD copy of this remix.

I just compared it to the CD version (from Kick 30) … and WOW … what a difference!!! The sound on Kick 30 is so compressed that you barely hear the percussion and funk guitar, which are an essential part of their sound! You did an amazing job as usual! You’re giving the songs enough room to breathe and fill the room naturally. Now, I wish you would rip the entire Kick 30 from vinyl… lol … As far as the track selection goes, that release is almost perfect, but like I said, the sound is too compressed throughout.

Gladly! I always appreciate your transfers, even if I already have a particular 12″ rip. Your versions are 100% better! Here is Kick 30, if you want to compare the versions. It’s really a shame, because otherwise, this is the perfect package.

So excited for these mixes in true vinyl!! I’m not as familiar with the Ben Liebrand mix, but I love the Extended Dance Mix of New Sensation. Takes me right back to MTV and radio, where you couldn’t avoid INXS! Thank you Paul!!

Thanks for the post, Paul! This mix actually has been released several times on cd on various re-releases of Kick…the 30th Anniversary edition and also a Japan release a long time ago. You just have to look very carefully on discogs for it. 🙂 I’m actually more partial to the Mendelsohn Mix than Ben’s. Actually, there was a dj mix (never found out who) that made a killer mix of it using ONLY the normal radio edit and using some fancy editing and effects. Thanks for the great post!

Thanks for this upload. I’ve had this 12″ since a young teen and used to play it to death when I DJ’d at school discos in the late 80s. My copy is certainly showing signs of age!

I was really excited by this release as I couldn’t find it in my digital collection.
Then I listened to it and thought : “Isn’t it that crappy mix that was on my Mistify” CD Single ????

Back to the cellar….searched through my CD’s and… YES ! Same version !

Please understand it as “this is by far not my favourite mix’.
But of course, thanks again for those great memories !

(and your rip is amazing !)

Thank you Paul.

Did you know that Ben Liebrand has made 2 mixes of Need You Tonight?

The other one is only released on DMC.

Regards,

Donovan

“Need You Tonight” just oozes sex and longing. And although I do like this mix by Ben Liebrand, I still like the original mix from the album and how it segues into “Mediate” a lot more. For me, I really love the B-Side’s, “New Sensation” as it has some great effects thrown in. Nick Launay nailed it in my opinion. Thank you so much Paul for this cool 12-inch!!!

Memories! Super cool, although this single was the last of the glory years for me at the time, I loved it, especially paired with Mediate, but Kick as a whole felt too commercial to me then. Even the concert seemed too ‘going through the motions.’ I’ve come back around to appreciate it as time went on, but it wasn’t until Welcome To Wherever You Are that I was a full on fan again. I guess I prefer it when they have a rawer sound, but still funky. Shabooh Shoobah & The Swing are all time favorites as is WTWYA. So… Read more »

Thanks for this upload. Ben Liebrand is now your most consistent mixer in Holland who has been around long before the cult DJ’s like Tiesto became popular in the 90s and onward. He has made many famous 80s mixes. His best achievement is the archiving of rare extended disco verions in the cd series Grand 12 Inches.

Liebrand is only surpassed in talent by the late Peter Slaghuis, who was most famous for his Dutch Mix of Nu Shooz’ I Can’t Wait. Unfortunately Peter Slaghuis (Hithouse, if translated literally) died in a car accident in 1991.
