BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981
“(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” is a song written and performed by British synthpop band Heaven 17. It was a minor hit in the UK in 1981, despite being banned by the BBC. It was also a minor dance hit in the US.
“(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” was written by Heaven 17 members Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh and Glenn Gregory and included on their 1981 debut album Penthouse and Pavement. It was the first single released by the band.
In the lyrics fascism and racism are described in an ironic fashion, using the lexicon of funk music. The lyrics of the song also reference the UK and US political leaders of the time, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President Ronald Reagan, respectively, and include denunciations of both racism and fascism. According to the book Banned!: Censorship of Popular Music in Britain, 1967-92, the song was banned by the BBC due to concerns by Radio 1’s legal department that it was extremely offensive to Ronald Reagan as he was the new US President at the time of the song’s release.
Despite being banned by the BBC, “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” reached number 45 on the UK singles chart. It debuted on that chart on 21 March 1981 and peaked one week later. The single peaked at number 72 in Australia, and was also a minor dance hit in the US, reaching number 29 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart in 1981.

Perfect choice!
Perfect post for the events this past week. Thank you Dj PaulT!
The song is great but your comment as lyrics – naive, so naive…
This is a song for today’s world as well as for yesterday’s!
Dear Paul,
Thank you for your wonderful “voice” of light in this dark time. This song and so much of your recent postings express volumes. Sorry I’ve not been around in the last couple of days. Between illness and the awful result of the election, I have been quite depressed. Thank you for your positive vibrations here and all of your wonderful fans who have wonderful things to say about the current state of things. I know that with thoughts of light and love we all will rise above everything.
Big Hug!!
Jeff
(I could go on debating, too, but..I realized – I live in The Netherlands and we still are a monarchy. So we have our own battles to pick in a so called demography.)
One of my favourite Heaven 17 singles and a very appropriate message in these lyrics is still revelant 35 years later.
Thanks Paul 🙂
Well chosen!!
ROFL when I saw today’s post!!!!!
We don’t need it, but it’s here. It’s so depressing when this 35 year old lyrics apply perfectly today. Just heard it on the news, Leonard Cohen is dead, another great one is gone, he probably couldn’t bare this idiotism. 🙁
And now, Leon Russell, too.
Thanks Paul
Amen. And, Thanks.

Great choice, Paul. Thanks!
You’re welcome micmij 🙂
Thanks for the memories, Paul — and sadly appropriate once again. This song and “We’ve Got A Bigger Problem Now” were gospel.
You’re welcome Dreamtiger 🙂
Excellent song – and pertinent choice. This was a fun track to dance to in the UK and a fun dig at silly Reagan at the time. Although the BBC wanted to be seen ‘banning’ things, they were still played by the better DJs. However the record sleeve was always a bit rubbish!
I agree Art the sleeve is not very creative. But the track is awesome 🙂
Relativity Bro, Relativity.
Thanks Charly 🙂
This is very cool Paul. Love H17.
Thank you Omar 🙂
That´s very nice, Paul. I still love Heaven 17´s music. Completely underrated although they were quite popular in the Eighties. GG still has a great voice live. I have about a dozen or so H17 12inches but would still love to see more of them on your fabulous site.
PS: Look for the documentary “Into the night with… Glenn Gregory and Midge Ure”. A must-see!
Thank you Song And Dance 🙂
Paul —
I LOVE you not-so-subtle political messaging. p.s. I am sooooo with you.
Thank you jbird we need everyone to share their voice 🙂
