Gina X – No G·D·M (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

A. Front

“No G.D.M.” is a 1979 single by German dance-rock/electropop ensemble Gina X Performance from Cologne, consisting of vocalist Gina Kikoine and writer/producer Zeus B. Held, Ralph Morgenstern (backing vocals), Hinrich Sickenberger (backing vocals, drums) and Lazlo Czigany (drums).

Art history student Gina Kikoine was heavily influenced by Lou Reed and Patti Smith, as well as the art avant-garde. The concept for Gina X Performance came together when she met Zeus B. Held, who was at the time moving on from rock to a more electronic sound.

Held had previously been a member of the group Birth Control, and split to record solo in 1978, beginning work with Kikoine that year. Gina X Performance released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and were frequently played in North American and European dance clubs at the height of their popularity.

Single “No G.D.M” and first album “Nice Mover” quickly became cult hits and a blueprint for 80´s electronic dance music. Kikoine later described collaboration “the absolute union of music, poetry and travesty.”

“No G.D.M.” is a tribute to writer/actor Quentin Crisp. The “No Great Dark Man” refers to Quentin Crisp’s remark about there not being a “great dark man. Although the single recieved heavy club play it failed to have any chart success.

In 1990 British synth-pop duo Erasure covered the song and relesed it as the b-side to “Blue Savannah”.

This is the 1985 Statik record re-release.

It would be good to see this reappear sometime, if possible. Heard it on YuTube and immediately thought to check here…

I’m late to the party I realize, but I just discovered your blog, and I must commend you on the quality posts. I for one really appreciate not only the audio quality but the time spent on the posts themselves. I am a huge 12″ single collector, I have thousands, mostly from the 80s. Ripping them is a lot of work, I know.

Gina X has resurfaced! She collaborated on a single with Austra, released 2013. It’s a great track:

Hi Paul, that’s absolutely new to me. I only know the version by Erasure and thought it was an original song. Thanks for lightin’ me up 🙂

Hi Paul. Thanks for posting. I have this 12″ and always found the Dub to be the best mix, though the original 12″ is still my favourite version. It was reissued with yet more new mixes in 2003. You can’t keep a good tune down!

This is a great 12 inch from back in 1979. Statik re-released it in 1985. Unfortunately the Remastered CD’s didn’t include these versions. I had this 12 inch and ripped it for my blog back on 7/16/13. It is one of my biggest downloads to this day, nearly hitting the 2,500 mark! I’m certain it will due justice for you as well!!

Another new one for me Paul and I’m so excited because Zeus B. Held is the producer. I loved his work with Dead Or Alive. Actually, he was my favorite producer of their songs. Thanks for another gem. You’re so fantastic Paul!!!

Zeus B Held also did some great work with John Foxx on his The Golden Section album, and the 1983 12″ Endlessly is wonderful.
