BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“Man on the Corner” is a song by British band Genesis, released on 5 March 1982. The song was written by Phil Collins. It peaked at number 41 in the UK Singles Chart.
The lyrics describe a man who spends his days on a street corner, shouting at passersby. According to the radio show In the Studio with Redbeard (which spotlighted the making of the Abacab album), the song was composer Collins’ first song about the homeless epidemic and society’s reluctance to help the homeless or find a resolution. Backed by a simple drum machine beat, the song takes a musically dark tone. Near the end of the 1980s, Collins would revisit the theme of homelessness in “Another Day in Paradise”. This song makes a prominent feature of the Roland TR-808 drum machine at the beginning, then switches to a drum set during the bridge.
NOTE ABOUT THIS TRANSFER:
For the A-side “Man On The Corner” I used the US 12″ promo because it sounded much better than it’s UK 7″ counterpart. For the B-side “Submarine” I used the UK 7″ restoring it as best as I could. I also included the artwork from the UK 7″ and the label from the US 12″ promo.

Genesis was my first concert and remember being so impacted by this song. LOVE. Thanks!
Hi Paul, I haven’t stopped by in a couple weeks since I’m swamped with work, but I wanted to wish you all the best in the new year and tell you how much I continue to appreciate your posts. As I type, I’m turning up that Kylie Minogue B-side Glad to be alive (1987) which is one of my most loved B-sides ever. So, thanks again.
Thanks Paul! Great to see these Genesis tracks here as well! And far from being inessential as another commenter said (of course, each to his own taste, so no criticism to that person) I think Submarine is one of the best Genesis b-sides ever. If anybody does not know this, Submarine was originally thought of as part 3 of Dodo/Lurker. I think it fits great there. On another note, being a fan of progressive rock and things on the verge of that, I am really pleased to see Genesis and Peter Gabriel posts here. I hope you continue the So… Read more »
You’re very welcome JohanErikson. I will see what I can do for you in the future 🙂
JohanErikson, regarding the Dodo/Lurker suite, you mean this one, right? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj4KytCipok&feature=related I believe that the album Abacab would have worked better as originally intended, ie as a 75 min. double LP. Anyway, a few cassette tapes of the complete work were given to some journalists to review it before it was released to the public, and one of those original cassettes surfaced some 10 years ago. Fortunately the kind owner of that tape agreed to transfer it to digital format. The resulting transfer, which sounds wonderful, is now known as Abacab Complete, and it is widely available to everyone. For… Read more »
Thanks for the links Alessandro, actually I had never heard that Naminanu also was thought to be part of that suite (as suggested in the youtube link). One comment there suggested that it should be the first part of the suite, which sounds reasonable musically (Submarine fits much better as the last part) but that is not supported by Abacab complete either. Anyway, the Abacab complete cd was also very interesting!
Love the pensive mood of this song back in 1982, but never knew there was a special mix! Love such special surprises you bring to the BTG table, Paul!
Don’t worry about the Disco Friday, we can always put on our Disco Roller Blades next week!
Thank Genesis It’s Friday!
Disco roller blades whoo hoo. Love your sense of humor Ric 🙂 Have a great weekend.
Many thanks Paul for this new incredible offering. Yours is, once again, a wonderful rip. I like very much this special mix of Man On The Corner, which in my opinion surpasses the album version, even if it’s far from being a radical remix. It just brings out to the foreground some little sound features, and expecially the cymbals benefit from the treatment. The shorter duration is a good thing as well. Regarding Submarine, it’s not an essential song, but it is a previously unreleased track from the Abacab recording sessions, and it is quite nice to listen to while… Read more »

You’re welcome Manuel 🙂
Your info doesn’t mention it but the song made it to #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (almost identical position as in the UK). I’ve always loved this song but it really never got much airplay after 1982 (at least not on my local radio stations). Thanks so much (although I was looking forward to Disco Friday, new year, new schedule?)
Hi Matracas I actually did put it in the chart table. Actually I got my days mixed up I thought today was Thursday lol. i guess I am behind due to the holidays. Don’t worry Disco Friday will be back next week 🙂
Thanks!!
It’s a great track , More Genesis will came??
You’re welcome enjoy Drake!
