Frankie Goes To Hollywood – The Power Of Love (UK Cassette Single)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1984

“The Power of Love” is a song originally recorded and released by British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. It was written by Holly Johnson, Peter Gill, Mark O’Toole and Brian Nash, four of the five members of the band. It was released by the group as their third single.

Initially issued as a single in November 1984, and taken from the debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984), “The Power of Love” followed its two predecessors, “Relax” and “Two Tribes”, to the top of the UK singles chart. It scored the band an early December number-one. “The Power of Love” was also a top 10 hit in several European countries, in Australia and New Zealand, and in Canada. “The Power of Love” is often regarded as a Christmas song, despite having no reference to Christmas within the song lyrics. However, the accompanying video features the Nativity of Jesus, and the single cover was The Assumption of the Virgin. The single spent just one week at Number One in the UK, outsold by the charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid, which until 1997 was the best selling single ever in the UK.

Holly Johnson, who co-wrote the song, later reminisced: “I always felt like ‘The Power of Love’ was the record that would save me in this life. There is a biblical aspect to its spirituality and passion; the fact that love is the only thing that matters in the end”.

**I have chosen to leave this cassette un-edited to keep the integrity of the original cassette. I did clean up the audio manually removing clicks/pops along with adding fade-in at the beginning and end of the cassette. This was recorded with DOLBY NR enabled.

Btw, do any of our American friends around here understand the Liverpudlian dialect? 😉 😉

“Christmas is here once again so let´s all have some fun…” 🙂 I have all the cassette releases, of course, but I love your remaster. Thank you so much, Paul. 🙂

Thank you Paul.Good to have another of these FGTH cassettes from you. One thing though…I think this one runs a bit slow. Needs to be sped up by about 1.5% I think.

Thank you Paul for getting us in the Christmas spirit! Another one new to my ears, as it didn’t chart in the US. I love how you mix things up with cassette singles, and the audio dynamics are fantastic!

I love everything by FGTH, but especially this song. I love finding new remixes of their rather small selection of songs and therefore highly appreciate this cassette transfer. THANK YOU, PAUL!

Thank you very much! I bought this tape at a second hand shop only to discover that its former owner erased and taped over it the crappiest kind of music ever. At least the cassette and J-card look pretty decent.

I love these cassette transfers, they sound unique to my ears. You did a great job on the previous cassette posts i noticed over recent years too.

As for this song, it always gets me in the festive spirit.

Thanks Paul 🙂

I promptly loved that song since it came out in 1984. It´s also my favourite ever Christmas song. As far as I know, this cassette mix was never released on CD or digitally. This is like a special Christmas gift. Thank you so much Paul 🙂

Yes they messed up CD1 initially but they redid it correctly mastered and replacement discs were made available to early purchasers and then included in later batches of the 2CD set. This unfortunetly happens with many of these expanded reissues. Shocking that they are so slap dash.

Thanks for letting me know. But now that I have Paul´s meticulous remaster, I don´t need more.
