Eurythmics – This Is The House (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. Front

REQUEST

“This Is the House” was Eurythmics’ third single, recorded in 1982 on their own 8-track home studio in north London, built with a personal bank loan from group member David A. Stewart’s bank manager rather than record company support. Although the following year it was included on the group’s hugely successful Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) album, the single itself was a commercial flop, failing to chart. No music video was made for the single.

The recordings were produced by Stewart and Adam Williams, ex-bassist of 2 Tone Records band The Selecter. They showcased a new sound and direction from the group, focusing on synthesizers and drum machines as opposed to the psychedelic guitar-based band sound of their In the Garden album.

The 12 inch single featured an extended remix of the track, plus four songs recorded on Eurythmics 1982 tour. This extended mix, plus the live version of “Your Time Will Come”, were omitted from SonyBMG’s 2005 remaster package, and remain unavailable on CD.

Special note about the live tracks: There is some distortion that is due to the original mastering. This distortion can also be heard on the 2005 CD remaster of “In The Garden”. I made every attempt to clean this up but some noise is still present. I also seperated each live track into seperate files because they are banded into seperate tracks on the 12″. The tracks will however flow together when played all at once.

Paul, thank you for another exemplary post. This was one of my favourite Eurythmics songs, but it was many years before I got to hear the 12″ version and accompanying live tracks. It was worth the wait and your rip is even better. Thanks again!

First time listening to the 12″ mix of “This is the House”…… It’s been a hard week in my part of the world here, but you’ve really helped my sad frame of mind.

Thank you, thank you…… Ray xoxox

Thanks for posting this! I bought the 2005 reissue and was disappointed this material was not included. Great to have the chance to finally check it out. Ditto for The Walk as well. Much appreciated.

Hope you got your hands on the US Record Store Last Christmas 12 inch Paul, because the BTG’ers at the other side of the Atlantic are of course very anxious to finally hear the instrumental version after 30 years.

Great Eurythmics post by the way. Thanks!

Thanks so much for posting this. This is one of my favorite, prized 12″ singles. And this will definitely be the best this record can sound. I remember finding this rarity in the shops….too many years ago. Years ago, I even transferred this one for myself digitally and found the recording to have a lot of distortion and some grainy sound. But what a trippy live performance. They were so modern and strange at this time,I love it. This era of the band is so sadly underrepresented in the digital realm, including the other rarities that featured on the corresponding… Read more »

Hey Paul! So happy to hear that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and that you’re feeling better each day. This is a great post on your return. I love how you care so much about quality. Before the labels put anything out, they really should have you do the final checking, especially if they use vinyl rips. You’re just too cool!

Your scans are far better than my pics. Gotta give you that for certain! I had a friend do the recordings for me. Perhaps you can make the comparison and let me know how they sound to you. All is good! 🙂

Thank you. I never liked the early stuff . For me the story began with “Love is a stranger”. But i’ll give this one a go and will try again. What i really loved was the Stewart/Lennox-Project before the Eurythmics, called “The Tourists”. Really great Powerpop/New Wave Rock. “So good to be back home” was on heavy rotation back in the days.

Another great rip, the A side was at the time never chart material, but they were just months away from the big time.

Love the live tracks.

Thanks as always for the rip Paul.. 🙂
