Erasure – Crackers International (Part II) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

Seasons Greetings! I originally posted this 12″ on December 21, 2011. I really love this EP and wanted to give it a proper transfer. This is the first restoration using the new Ortofon 2M Bronze. I really hope that it is an upgrade and you will be able to hear the difference.

Crackers International is a Christmas EP released by Erasure in 1988, in between the albums The Innocents and Wild!.

The EP appeared in several different versions. The original UK release by Mute Records consisted of four original, self-produced tracks. In the UK, where at the time EPs were eligible for the singles chart, it became one of Erasure’s most successful releases, matching the number two peak of 1986’s “Sometimes.” It was promoted with a simple music video for the lead track “Stop!”, showing Clarke and Bell performing the song on a stage surrounded by “stop”, “no entry”, “give way” and similar road signs.

In the U.S., Crackers International was still considered an EP, although two remixes were added (bringing the track list count to six) when Sire Records released it. In the U.S., where EPs chart on the Billboard 200, it hit number seventy-three. The song “Stop!” was also released as its own stand-alone single in the U.S., just barely making an appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 (number 97). On the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart “Stop!” / “Knocking on Your Door” peaked at number four as a double-sided entry.

Additionally, a version of the EP was released in the UK by Mute Records in a very limited-edition, seasonal pressing, titled Crackers International Part 2. Released originally in 12″ vinyl with extended versions of “Stop!” and “Knocking on Your Door”, both remixed by Mark Saunders, it also added the Christmas standard “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”. It was subsequently released as a compact disc containing the original 7″ versions of “Stop!” and “Knocking on Your Door” (also of note is the fact that there were two different versions of the single mix of “Stop!”, one with a fade, and a slightly longer one with a ‘cold’ ending).

Sire Records commissioned some mixes for the song by Justin Strauss, who previously had remixed A Little Respect for the U.S. market, but the mixes remain unreleased. This versions can be found on the Soundcloud page of Justin Strauss.

Twenty-five years after Crackers International, in 2013, Erasure would finally release a proper Christmas album, titled Snow Globe.

Paul

First of all, thank you for posting great music as always. You do an amazing job. Im listening to track 1 and I hear a subtle compression noise in the background. It reminds me of the same noise the vinyl release of Janet’s Remixed had on one side. Is this normal from the release since the rest of the tracks sound fine?

Thanks

I know you don’t use any compression at all, I meant it sounds like a compression noise, it’s like when you speak into a fan and you get that speedy oscillating effect….I’m not sure how to best describe it.

Stop is just another amazing song by Vince & Andy! This remix is ok, actually I have this 12″, somewhere in the closet, think it’s been only ones on my turntable, but I prefer the full single mix that’s on the regular Crackers International CD EP 3.02 with the cold ending. Also have the 7″ vinyl on which the single mix fades out, which they also stupidly
put on their best of CD, Pop the 20 first Hits. There’s another remix of Stop by Vince Clark on the Pop Remixed CD worth checkin’ out!

Fantastic! I remember being at a friend’s Christmas party in 1988 in Los Angeles and he put this on in order to play “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” We all loved it. I looked for this EP for so long and ultimately had to put up with buying the EBX box set in order to get this track.

Indeed. Crackers International had the classic xmas track “She Won’t Be Home” as well as “The Hardest Part”. Great tracks! 🙂

The LCDMUTE93 you mention was a mispress by MPO, another version pressed by DADC Austria (but still for the UK) had the correct 12” mixes. Later MPO presses were fixed as well.

Beautiful! Oh Paul, you know what I want for Christmas! 😀

I have the little CD3″ of this with the postcard, and it’s a nice little item, but the 12″ art is so much better. Beautiful.

I hate to sound like a broken…well, you know, but I do hope we get the A Little Respect US promo 12″ before New Years too. It would be a perfect cap to the 30th anniversary of the band…and the only rare US promo 12″ with exclusive mixes you have yet to post. 🙂

Happy Christmas, as they say in merry old England!

Oh, that picture on the cover makes me long for a snowy Christmas Paul. We did have some snow over the weekend, but it looks so much nicer (and warmer too) than what’s left around here. Anyway, so looking forward to download this with your new stylus!! I can’t imagine it sounding any better than what you’ve ripped before. You just have this expert talent of bringing the best out of old grooves!!

Have a great day and thanks again for this new and improved rip!!
