Disco Friday: Keep It or Can It?

Alright, my fabulous BTG family — let’s talk.

Every Friday, I’ve been pulling out those glitter-drenched 12-inch disco delights to send us into the weekend with a little extra sparkle. I love doing it… but here’s the tea:

Disco Friday posts aren’t exactly setting the dancefloor on fire. Fewer comments, fewer downloads — it’s like half the crowd went to the bar before the best part of the song. 🥂

So here’s my question…
Do you still want the full-on Disco Friday experience every week?
Or should I shake it up, post other stuff on Fridays, and just drop disco tracks in now and then when the mood strikes?

No hard feelings either way — I just want to make sure the music here keeps your toes tapping and your speakers happy.

Sound off in the comments, and let’s decide if Disco Friday stays or takes a little vacation.

Stay gold, stay groovy, and keep on dancin’,
—Paul 💿🔥

First off, thank you for all your hard work. Simple words cannot express my gratitude. I’m from “that” era, so I can take it or leave it, but I do prefer the “whatever strikes” mode. If it makes you feel good, share that energy with the rest of us. All the best.

Hi DjPaulT, I tell you I´m new in this place, but the opinions from your followers is the same, they want the full on disco experience, so… Who I am to denied it? I want that keep your way. Keep the good work and spirit here.

Keep the disco alive, but mix it with some late 80’s, early 90’s House remixed classics.

not a bad idea! Keep it Disco Friday, but add some House/Techno or White Label remixes of Disco Classics. And there were definitely some good “Disco” tunes in the 80s like Funkytown, etc.

You already answered your own question. Or the statistics did. Let the number of downloads dictate what is posted. Why should you spend your precious time painstakingly preparing content that few people consume? Instead experiement with new categories to find something that people are interested in. Better for you and better for your audience. Everyone happy. Suggestion, more early 80s Italo from the experimental synth/drum machine era. Thank you for your service.

While I appreciate some disco tracks, I’ve never been big on the genre (but that’s me). Maybe mix it up every other week? That might be a good compromise.

Definitely keep Disco Fridays but I’d encourage you to cheat a little bit. The 70’s were very cool 🙂

I love the disco stuff (maybe even more than the usual content, I must admit). Please, do not stop with Disco Friday!

As someone commented before, this is such an underrepresented style and there is so much more than Donna Summer and the likes. I understand it might not be the most popular genre (disco demolition night was a thing, right?), but it is great to change a bit and keep some people *very happy*!

Hello Paul
There are plenty of disco classics, and not just from the 70s. I’d say keep it. It’s a great addition to the mix, and not just on weekends.

Have a nice Sunday
Best,

Maybe it’s because you hear the usual names. Anyone who knows Fred Wesley’s “House Party” or the Montana Sextet’s “Who Needs Enemies (With a Friend Like You),” or Edwin Starr’s “Get Up Whirlpool,” knows what I mean. Disco isn’t just upbeat or 4 to the floor rhythm. Rarities are completely absent. with kind regards dj Sündenfall / Vienna Austria

Please keep disco Fridays, more from the late 70’s to early 80’s which was the sweet spot of the era for me. I agree with some of the comments, maybe post some deeper tracks that never made it to CD (if this is possible of course). One example, I loved the Italo-Disco from that era (Kano,Firefly, etc.) and there is one track from Capricorn, simply called Capricorn as well. The 12 inch version has never been on a CD as far as I know, I only have a bad vinyl rip I found many years ago.Would love to have a pristine… Read more »

Hi Paul, i’d can it if it’s not getting many downloads, that speaks volumes! Switching it up anyway keeps the blog fresh, more rarities would be great!

Hi Paul – I think the answer is in your post. If they are getting less interest I’d move on rather and try something new perhaps. Like a commenter below – what I really like is the vinyl edits/mixes that have never appeared since e.g. on cd/digital. The Yaz(oo) & Springsteen ones were great examples. Many Thanks

I love Disco Fridays. Keep it and post some of the harder to find songs like “Rock Radio” by Gene Dunlap. There was so much more to disco in the 70’s and 80’s besides Gloria Gaynor and Donna Summer.

I think the main reason those Friday disco posts don’t get much feedback is that the track selection isn’t hitting the sweet spot. Right now, it feels like we’re leaning too safe and too close to the mainstream-friendly disco sound. Back in the ’70s, the most exciting disco wasn’t what was topping the white soft rock–dominated charts — it was the underground, hard-grooving, “über beat” tracks that pushed boundaries and shook up the industry. If we dig deeper into those raw, unapologetically funky cuts that really challenged the status quo, I think we’ll see people get a lot more engaged.… Read more »

That is my impression also! As a Disco lover, I think the great stuff is really not what was mainstream-friendly stuff, both in the 70s and specially the early 80s, which was generally a rock-tinted disco.

Maybe just call it Dance Friday and have a mixture of 70s disco and various dancefloor styles of the 80s…

I’ll be supportive of whatever you do Paul. But, my personal taste as far as dancefloor/club classics go are the R&B/funk hits of the 80s. Think Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle, James Ingram, Miami Sound Machine… even forgotten ones from Dionne Warwick, Jeffrey Osborne, Kool & The Gang, James Brown, Dan Hartman. Even some rock acts got in on the dance floor action, like The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Hall & Oates, Billy Idol, Platinum Blonde. Posting club hits from these artists will really give your posts massive crossover appeal across multiple genres to the BTG community as our tastes are… Read more »

As a footnote, I really enjoyed the Shep Pettibone ‘season’ recently. Maybe an Arthur Baker, Jellybean and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis ‘seasons’ would be great too?

Within my general music taste I like the occasional 12 inch, but most of the time find them long and boring.  What I would like to see are more single, 45, and 7 inch single edits and mixes that have not been released to CD or have not properly been released digitally.   They are so many radio/single versions that have not either been released digitally, or if they have, have been dynamically bricked to all hell. Particularly as your blog specialises in dance and disco, it would be nice to see more dance single edits and mixes.   Failing that, I would like… Read more »

Some of my favorite posts from your blog have been Disco Friday posts, so my vote would be to keep it. But I also want you to be happy. If the interaction is really weak with these posts, I’d still be happy with disco popping up from time to time.
