BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
“Strangelove” is Depeche Mode’s eighteenth UK single, released on 13 April 1987, and the first single for the then upcoming album Music for the Masses. It reached number 16 in the UK charts (Depeche Mode would fail to make the Top 10 of the UK singles chart throughout the second half of the 1980s), but hit number 2 in West Germany and in South Africa, and was a Top 10 success in several other countries (Sweden, Switzerland, etc.). In the US, “Strangelove” charted twice on the Billboard Hot 100 reaching #76 in 1987 and again in 1988 #50. “Strangelove”was the first of nine number-ones on the US Dance charts, where it stayed for three weeks at the top in 1987.
This special US only 12” features new remixes of “strangelove” by Bomb The Bass, Mark Saunders and Tim Simenon. This remix is also known as “Strangelove ’88”. Sire Records commissioned these new remixes because they were not satisfied with the original release in 1987.
Also included are Justin Strauss remixes of “Nothing”.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful music…
Do you Have more records of Depeche Mode? It’a my favorite band of all time.
You are the best Dj’s Paul
Thanks for this one! I love the cover art they used on all the various Strangelove singles. I wonder if Sire Records did this wonderful ‘sequel’ cover from scratch? This particular photo was never used in the UK.
“Dear Sire art department: Please go out and buy a megaphone, and paint ‘Bong 13’ on it. Make the paint job look like these megaphone photos we have from England. Use this for the cover art, and when you are done, please send the megaphone to my office as a souvenir.” ??Maybe??
‘bad news travel fast’, Paul…well (sorry I’m spanish and my english is not right), the thing is there are both two blogs that have removed recently to music blogger community. one of them was ‘pop vinilo’ (spanish blog with mythic 80’s maxis that sounded overeher in 80’s pubs % discos) the other blog was removed just today: the veteran and fantastic blog ‘Vynil obscurity’ incredible but truth :to enter into, this message says: ‘lo sentimos pero el blog Vinyl obscurity ha sido eliminado’ it’s a sad day to 80’s blogger music brotherhood cheers and God’s blessings to endure wih your… Read more »
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My favourite DM song. Was pretty upset when Gucci used it for their Gucci Guilty ad.
A warm favorite. Thanks!
Nice song DM, Paul please make a Shep Pettibone mix week.
Thanks a lot.
Nacho.
I remember when J&R Music World was clearing out their longboxed CD3″s and SL ’88 was among them…for 99¢. Don’t worry everyone; I’m still kicking myself over not grabbing them up.
Yeah that would have been a great find Goodguy 🙂
Thanks!
My favorite DM single!
You’re welcome Drake 🙂
Gracias muy buen aporte
You’re welcome my friend Jorgeeugenio.
Awesome! Thanks Paul. Was going to rip this one myself for the Nothing Dub, but my vinyl is a little noisier than I had hoped…you saved me tons of time in cleaning lab. Great job as always.
You’re welcome Thomas. My copy was pretty quiet mostly because it was still sealed prior to ripping it for BTG. Happy I saved you some time 🙂
Should’ve been a bigger hit in the US both times. I was very surprised back in 1988 when it got a remix and re-release, only one year after its original release. I never knew the label wasn’t happy with the mixes. While I love the Bomb The Bass remix, I hear nothing wrong with the Phil Harding Pain Mix – my favourite mix of the lot.
Thanks Paul for your rip!
Yes Ric it should have been bigger. The Bomb The Bass mix actually did better on the Hot 100 than the original which peaked at #76. I like the Hardiing mix too but I am pretty fond of this one too. It’s hard to choose 🙂
Good evening.
Mister, you made me travel back to my youth when i was buying this same single. The same thrills when i heard that vinyl are present now. Thank you very much for priceless labour!
Thanks Sinecave that’s part of my goal for this blog to bring back memories and good times 🙂
Wow! harsh comments deleted
Yep that’s correct Maggle. I don’t mind constructive criticism but when they get rude they are gone 🙂
Great! was expecting Nothing (Dub) at high quality some time somewhere.
Thank you Paul.
That file even Justin Strauss does not have on tape [pity]
You’re welcome Sregio 🙂
I thank you, too, for finally providing the Dub. That particular remix has eluded my digital DM collection. Thanks, Paul!
I didn’t realize this wasn’t a huge US hit. I remember hearing it so much at the time that I just assumed it had a bigger radio chart life. Thanks, as always, for your great blog and write-ups.
I always thought this was a huge hit in the US as well VanceMan. I heard it played many times on the radio. A great classic track.
Thank you, Paul! I’ll take a Depeche Mode tune anytime!
You’re very welcome Antbee 🙂
another classic for me good band as well
Thank you Dazz22 🙂
Thanks Paul. Love DM. Please make this a UK synth pop week.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
I agree, Omar. Thanks, Paul!
Another vote in favour of Omar’s request. Thanks.
Synthpop week would be awesome!
Awesome 12 Inch! The ‘Nothing’ Remixes made it the one to have! Thoses were the elusive mixes. Thanks again for posting this one Paul!
You’re welcome RA Feutz 🙂
