“You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” is a song by British band Dead or Alive on their 1985 album Youthquake. The song was the first UK number-one hit by the Stock Aitken Waterman production trio. Released in November 1984, the record reached number one in March 1985, taking 17 weeks to get there. On the US Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at no. 11 on 17 August of that year.

Coincidentally this 12″ was released on this date 36 years ago today.

According to Pete Burns, 12-inch singles comprised over 70% of the original sales of You Spin Me Round, and because these were regarded by the record label as promotional tools rather than sales, the band had to threaten legal action against the label before they received the royalties on them.

The first time I ever heard this… My best friend had just gotten his Driver’s License, we were on a joyride to town listening to a local new age station had just gone under and some guy was in the studio borrowing the frequency just playing new wave records he liked, pirate radio style, the Murder Mix of You Spin me was one of them, right after hearing it we stopped by the local record store which was an old warehouse, a converted ice factory, inside I scored a copy of this mix a Mexican red vinyl copy no less.… Read more »

Thank you for re-posting this song, Paul!
For someone who did not like his voice, Pete Burns could belt out a song. This song and “Brand New Lover” are in my top 10 list.

Hi Paul, Always love to see dead or alive on here. For some reason, the US 12 had a generic black sleeve. And so did most of their other covers. I wonder why they didn’t have picture covers. The japanese always got the cool looking covers. Although by the time mad bad and dangerous to know came out, there were picture sleeves. Maybe they weren’t famous enough in the beginning. Although this song is overplayed, I havent heard it in a few years. I try to work through the millions of mixes of it, so that way its still fresh… Read more »

Hi paul,

I think because it was a smash hit, and took them by surprise. they had to press a ton of copies quickly, and also probably save a ton of money by just using generic sleeves. culture club didn’t have any problems, and same with many other covers. so i don’t think it was a conspiracy.

One of those remixes that I always liked better than the original, thanks.

This is a great follow-up to Divine’s record on Friday. Love the fact that today marks the day this single was first released too. Your tidbits are always fascinating and always welcome Paul. This record still has the power to kick a dancefloor’s collective butt and really has stood the test of time. I really miss Pete and Steve and their contribution to club/fashion culture. Thanks Paul for still “spinning ’round the best records!”
