Originally posted March 21, 2012
“What I Want” is a song written and recorded by the English band Dead or Alive. It was co-produced by the band and Zeus B. Held and released in August 1983 as the second single from Dead or Alive’s debut album Sophisticated Boom Boom.
The song was not a success when originally released, peaking at number eighty-eight in the UK Singles Chart. After Dead or Alive’s UK top-forty success of “That’s The Way (I Like It)”, “What I Want” was re-issued in June 1984. It did not fare much better during its second chart run, placing only one position higher, at number eighty-seven.
This 12″ is the 1984 re-issue which includes an alternate “Dance Mix” than what appeared on the 1983 version.
“The Stranger” was originally released in 1982 as an independent single on Black Eyes Records. After its release, Dead Or Alive was signed to Epic Records and re-recorded the song for the b-side release of “What I Want” the song did not appear on the original “Sophisticated Boom Boom” LP.

This song is a powerhouse Paul and I appreciate the fact that you’ve re-ripped it. It sounds so glorious and really packs a serious punch. The early DOA from “Sophisticated Boom Boom” has that raw sound that I adore. Pete and Company showed what a talented entity they are. Thank you so much for the love you have for Dead Or Alive. We all benefit from your attention to detail.
Jeff
Oh Paul before 2012 you have already given us loads of DOA…

I see you actually read the write-up above lol. Actually, I have posted so much stuff in the eleven years that I have been running BTG it is hard to keep track of what I have posted in the past and the dates. Thankfully I have readers like you Ian who have been on this journey from the start. I have removed most of the 2010/11 archives so I had forgotten that I posted DOA so early. Thank you for reminding me 🙂
Not quite from the start. I missed your earliest postings. But what I have been here for has been amazing…thank you Paul.
You just have to love DoA, don´t you? Next to several 12-Inches I have the 14-cd + 2-dvd Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI. Although I´m quite underwhelmed by the general sound experience with the CD box I´m happy to own it. When you´d ask people about DoA over here many would remember “YSMA” and then go blank. That´s a shame as DoA released brilliant singles (“In Too Deep” was the first one I really fell in love with) and several gems hidden on albums and b-sides. Thanks to you, Paul, we find a whole collection of brillliant DoA releases in brilliant… Read more »
There are so many hidden gems for people to explore. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Yes, turn it up!
Aways great to hear some DoA. Thank you Paul. 🙂
You’re welcome, Jermajesty. Its always good to see you here 🙂
hi paul, i became a big dead or alive fan, like most people after ‘you spin me round’ like a record became a massive hit. to me, ‘youthquake’ is one of my all time favorite albums, along with all the singles from it. i looked into earlier dead or alive after that, and got their first album, and some of the singles. but not this one. i did like and get their cover of kc and sunshine ‘thats the way’, which i thought was well done. their earlier album was much more raw and rougher than what i was used… Read more »
I loved the early raw DOA sound I thought the first LP “Sophisticated Boom Boom” was an overlooked gem. “Youthquake” was amazing I am so glad it did not sound like most of the other SAW productions of the time. The next album Mad Bad And Dangerous To Know” was the height of their career with more massive US hits. I really miss this band.
Have a safe weekend.
Paul
Love Dead Or Alive your rips are amazing Paul!
This one sounds incredible thank you.
Thank you, Jer 🙂
Thanks Paul. Always loved DOA’s 12″ singles.
You’re welcome, Omar 🙂
