I revisited Mr Grant’s earlier stuff a while ago when I bought the BBR reissues of the two Linx albums. Great stuff, their 12″ single of Plaything is one of my all time favourite eighties twelves. I love the way it goes from bass solo straight into a guitar solo…

I remember this track in the mid 80’s, played it many times on my personal stereo, and listened to it a lot when traveling on the train. David Grant featured a lot on Top of the Pops in the early 80’s and this is the hit that was my favourite, his wife Carrie has been on UK TV with David presenting singing talent contests and now she is a regular prenter on the BBC. Carrie was also in a band Sweet Dreams who performed “I’m Never Giving Up” for the Eurovision Song Contest (1983) and TOTP. Jaki Graham is still… Read more »

Brings back wonderful melodies. I got this track on tape by a charismatic classmate Peti de Wit, who was active as a dj already, although still in his teens. We lost contact, but everytime I hear this song it brings back the bittersweet feeling of things lost and gained in life.
Although a cover, this track is to me still one of the very hallmarks of the 80s, simply one of the best and warm melodies ever transmitted in the ether!

Another wonderful post. Jaki Graham with David Gant are simply perfection and hopefully you would consider posting more stuff on Jaki Graham. 🙂

Saludos y suerte.

Weird bordercrossing song. I knew rockers half-punks playbacking (and knowing the lyrics..), rockers slowdancing at 2 am.
But, wait, never saw the sleeve. Fortunately, because they are the weirdest looking singers in the world. (And that’s including katy perry and that guy in sports-shorts from the 80’s).) What were they thinking? Mmme Tussaud?

It looks to me like the “weirdness” is mostly due to lighting and makeup effects. The photographer was no doubt trying to be “artistic.” 😀

Fantastic!! Had this on my Greatest Hits of 1985 cassette (someone must’ve bought it for me, I never bought cassettes).

Didn’t realise it was a cover! 😮

Hoping you’re poised with Mated for later in the week. 😉

I loved this cover version, I reckon it was probably better than the original too. 1985 was such a good year for R&B & Soul music.

Thanks Paul 🙂

Dare I say, but I really like this version better than the original Spinners version. Like Daniel said, it’s good to get some slow tunes of R&B on your site. It’s excellent that you are all-inclusive Paul on your site. Not just one genre, but many. I love your eclecticism when you showcase the many twleves of the 80’s and the 90’s. We are all better off because of the phenomenal music you post Paul.

As always, thanks again!

Jeff
