“This Is Not America” is a song by English singer David Bowie and American jazz fusion band Pat Metheny Group, taken from the soundtrack to the 1985 film The Falcon and the Snowman.[1] It was released as a single in February 1985, reaching number 14 in the United Kingdom and number 32 in the United States.

The instrumental song that “This Is Not America” is based on, was written by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays and is itself a song called “Chris”, which was also included on the soundtrack for the film.

Metheny later noted that Bowie’s words were “profound and meaningful—and absolutely perfect for the film.”

Thank you, Paul, and Happy New Year to yourself and all the denizens of BTG.

I missed this offering the first time around and I’ve been on a real David Bowie bender of late. I’m glad to have it 🙂

Nice one Paul. Great timing too. I don’t live in America but I have friends and relatives that do, and we all need to remember that there are a lot of good people out there, and that the people who seem to have lost their minds, don’t define what America is. Love the song too. It was a good hook-up for Bowie to record with those guys. Cheers Paul for yet another winner.

On point, as always. As a theatre artist, there is nothing I love more than a great song placed in the appropriate contex, by two incredible artists no less. Thanks Paul.

Just two more weeks, Paul.
I too watched open-mouthed yesterday, but cling on – your future is looking much, much brighter. Brighter than ours anyway!

I was sure you would post this today after yesterdays’ sad news. This really isn’t America. Things can only get better now. Thanks for that re-rip of my favourite Bowie single.
