Commodores – Animal Instinct (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

REQUEST

The Commodores made one final stab at regaining R&B glory when Lionel Richie and producer/arranger James Anthony Carmichael both left in the mid-’80s. J.D. Nicholas became their lead singer, and Dennis Lambert assumed production duties.

“Animal Instinct” was the second single released from the album Nightshift. Regarded as an out-of-the-ordinary track for the Commodores, “Animal Instinct,” featuring Orange on lead vocals, was released almost six months after the hit “Nightshift,” and petered out at #22 on the R&B charts, while only making it to #43 on the US pop charts and #74 in the UK.

As in the words of Wayne & Garth “We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy”. I never thought I would find this 12″. A friend of mine back in the day bought this 12″ from a record store after he heard it playing in the store. We had never heard this on the radio and I never recorded the 12″ to a cassette tape. Years later I remembered this 12″ but not the title of the song so I was resigned to never find it again..my friend? we lost track in the early 90’s.

I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy….

hi
less obvious rules for me!
that’s part of the reason of why i keep following this blog
for all the posts im not mad on
it counteracts when something like this one is put out
aand you might get the dub, 7” as well
if you trawl the web or pay big bucks there are still zillions of ‘juicy stuff’ that is
sadly languishing away on vinyl somewhere
Great Post!

I agree, the less than obvious selection is always a welcome surprise, but I wouldn’t say no to some obvious choices too (Nighshift, Goin’ To The Bank)…LOL!
Some random thoughts…
Love the work of M+M!
and Diane Warren writing the R&B B-side? but then again, she did write Rhythm Of The Night for DeBarge…those were the days eh? before her balladry assault via Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, LeAnn Rimes etc.

The M+M mix of animal instinct in pristine quality !
You definitely don’t go for the obvious choice (nightshift) and that’s appreciated.
Thnx for all you passionate work Paul !
