Buckner & Garcia – Pac-Man Fever (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981

Side 1 Label

Re-Rip Newly Remastered!

Originally I posted this one on May 21, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon Super 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“Pac-Man Fever” is a hit single by Buckner & Garcia. Capitalizing on the video game craze of the early 1980s, the song, about the classic video game Pac-Man, peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in March 1982. That same month, it was certified Gold by the RIAA for over 1,000,000 units shipped to retailers; the single sold 1.2 million copies by the end of 1982, and 2.5 million copies in total as of 2008. VH1 ranked it at #98 on their list of 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.

Isn’t it ironic this one-hit wonder was certified gold for 1M copies; yet the next post, Aretha & George’s IKYWWFM, sold more and was NOT certified?

I remember downloading the original rip you posted! Wow doesn’t time fly! Yes, great record and after listening to it I am on a mission to find a rip of the album which has to be on a hard drive somewhere in this room!

Many thanks for all your hard work as always – What next, the Voice Of Q in 24Bit!?!

Once again, thanx Paul for all you do. Thought it was kinda cool that B&G were asked to do the “theme song” for Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Video game sound effects on a dance song? The ‘kids’ today hear the same thing on every second dreary EDM track, but back in the day when this came out, it was kinda cutting edge! Thanks again Paul, for keeping the awesome-80s alive!

Hey paul, you don’t happen to have the original vocal version of this, do you. I thought I found it, but apparently it was from the re-release of the CD with re-recorded vocals.

I believe I have the original on a 45 single, which I might be willing to lend to the cause… 🙂 Let me check and see if I still have it and what condition it’s in. (It ought to be in good shape, since it’s only been played a few times since I first got it back in the 80s, as I recall.)

I also have the original LP, but I doubt you feel much like cleaning and restoring the entire album. 😀

Paul, I have this 12-inch too. I always thought it was a very good song, but I hated that the club mix was just an extension of the instrumental. I couldn’t see why they couldn’t use the full-on vocal mix for it. We still have the background vocals, but the lead was lost. Thank you though for preserving this in all of your stellar audio though. I love the sound effects and this version clearly showcases them up-front. Hope you had a blast over the weekend. Thought about you and your family. Hope you had fun. Again, thanks for these… Read more »

Oh Yes!!! Even though there aren’t too many vocals, it is still a wonderful track. And Paul, with what you’ve done, it sounds exquisite!! I love your virtuosity in all things vinyl.

Thanks,

Jeff
