Hmmm – agree that the Smiths version is a failry dull instrumental but I’d forgotten about this Bryan Ferry remake.

Sad to say it sounds a bit of a dog’s dinner to me with the shrieking backing vocals and over bearing drum machine. A shame because if it hadn’t been so over-produced it might actually have made for a good track.

Thanks for posting though – never heard the other versions at the time!

I’m not familiar with this by title alone, so I’m looking forward to having a listen. Thanks for the share 🙂

Thanks, I only know The Smiths version of this, which is one of their worst songs IMO, though that might be due to the lack of Morrissey input, so I’ll be keen to see if Bryan can spruce it up a bit. 😀

After giving this a close listen, I can only conclude that Morrissey was a genius. On first listen I tried to imagine what sort of vocal line he would’ve given it, whilst I heard Bryan crooning away underneath. It just helped me further understand how amazingly original Morrissey had been in The Smiths – he rarely sang a regularly phrased line, yet it never sounded odd. Eg try singing the first verse to This Charming Man (if you know it) over the top and you’ll see the difference in vocal approach. I’d say Bryan’s was very standard by comparison. Not… Read more »

Love both Bryan’s work with Roxy Music and his solo stuff, but strangely, while Roxy Music was massive with their singles, Bryan’s solo singles didn’t quite have the chart impact. Of his 80s solo singles, only two hit Top 20, with one of which (Slave To Love) peaking at #10.
All the three singles from Bete Noire are brilliant, but all charted lowly.
Thanks for your rip, Paul. Lovely collaboration among Bryan, Johnny and Patrick.
